Results of CPAC’s 2024 GOP presidential straw poll closer than some expected

An anonymous online straw poll on the 2024 GOP presidential nomination saw former President Donald Trump easily in the lead.

The weekend poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event in Florida confirmed that the 45th president is still a powerful and influential part of the Republican Party.

Though Trump has not formally announced he will be seeking a second term and running in the 2024 race, CPAC announced Sunday that he had garnered 59% of the ballots that were cast in the online straw poll. The results show that Trump is still playing an important role in the eyes of voters as last year’s CPAC Orlando straw poll saw him with 55% support and in Dallas last July, he captured 70% of the votes in a CPAC 2024 straw poll, according to Fox News.

While many have also touted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for a presidential bid in 2024. the popular Republican came in at 28% in this weekend’s poll. Though DeSantis trailed Trump in a big way, he still garnered more votes than any other potential candidates listed.

“No one else among the 19 names listed on the ballot cracked 2%,” Fox News noted, adding that DeSantis managed to capture 61% support on a second 2024 ballot question that did not include Trump’s name.

That second question showed 6.3% support for former Secretary of State during the Trump administration, Mike Pompeo, and Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump, Jr., at 5.9%. Former 2016 Republican presidential candidates, Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky, both got 3.3% support. Coming in with just 3.1% of the votes on that question was South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley captured 2.1% support.

“Any questions?” Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich tweeted in response to the poll results. “President Trump continues to grow the conservative MAGA movement, which includes growing his political dominance.”
