A comical old episode of Goliath’s “After School with Miss Kathy,” a satirical take on the indoctrination of school kids, is making the rounds online and proves to be rather fitting in light of recent reporting about questionable research on Alzheimer’s drugs AND other pharmaceutical concerns.
In the episode that goes oh, so wrong, a puppet named Mr. McGoo is not feeling well, Miss Kathy explains. When asked what makes them feel better when they are not feeling well, the children sing out in unison, “Medicine!”
Donning an apron with a red cross on it, Miss Kathy then tells the children that they are going to talk about medicine for the day. She then holds up a rather large pill and asked the class what it was.
After the class enthusiastically identified it as a pill, she said, “That’s right, pills make us feel so much better when we’re sick.”

One little boy pushed back to say his mommy told him pills are bad for him, Miss Kathy explains that’s not true “if you follow the prescribed FDA regulations.”
After answering an inquiry about what the Food and Drug Administration is she then asked, “Who knows how a pill gets approved by the FDA?”
The class is stumped by the question and Miss Kathy proceeds to explain the three-step process: 1) The scientists have to invent a pill that makes people feel better; 2) The scientists need to test the pill on lots and lots of people; and 3) If the pill works the scientists send the test results to the FDA for approval.
The latter step was voiced with glee, prompting cheers from the children.
Well, all but one — the same little boy who was skeptical about pills.
He asked why can’t the FDA do the testing and was told that the agency doesn’t have the money or the resources.
The boy then asked, “Couldn’t the scientist just lie about the test results?”
This prompted a spirited back and forth about motives and Miss Kathy assuring him that the FDA would assure the accuracy of the results, but the clever boy pushed on to ask what would happen if the scientists gave the FDA money to rubber stamp approval and the class starts singing out about bribes.
Correctly sensing that she was losing the room, Miss Kathy assured the students that would never happen and quickly turned her focus back to Mr. McGoo to ask the puppet how he was feeling after taking his pill.
“The pill made me feel all better,” Mr. McGoo declared.
“Is Mr. McGoo addicted to pills?” the same inquisitive boy asked, and the children then start talking about addiction to the horror of Miss Kathy.
