Watch: Screaming bullfight spectators sent plunging to ground in deadly seating collapse

The deadly collapse of wooden stands during a bullfight in Columbia should have been foreseeable in that one look at the arena would make one question how the seating lasted this long.

At least four people were killed when a section of the stands collapsed on Sunday, with hundreds more injured, according to Fox News.

“The disaster was caught on camera. Hundreds of screaming spectators were sent plunging to the ground when the multi-level stands gave way in a packed stadium in the city of El Espinal in Tolima state. It happened during a traditional event known as “corraleja” when members of the public enter the ring to engage the bulls,” Fox News reported.

In what may be a surprise to some, bullfighting still takes place in a few areas of the world. While illegal in most countries, the practice still takes place in Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador, according to Humane Society International.

“Assertions that bullfighting constitutes a fair and even fight between the bull and the matador are simply untrue. Each bull is weakened both mentally and physically before coming face-to-face with the matador,” the organization’s website explains, noting that the animals often endure an “agonizing death.”

In Columbia, a corraleja is a bullfighting festival where the public is invited to engage the bulls in the ring. The bulls are not killed after the less formal “fight.”

Here’s another view of the incident from above.

The tweet translates as seen here: “I hope that all the people affected by the collapse of the Plaza de El Espinal can come out of their wounds unscathed. This had already happened before in Sincelejo. I ask the mayors not to authorize more shows with the death of people or animals.”
