Second illegal immigrant commits suicide in NYC-run homeless shelter as border crisis deepens

A second illegal immigrant, who is thought to have arrived from Venezuela, reportedly committed suicide in a New York City-run homeless shelter as the border crisis deepens and more migrants are set to arrive in the Big Apple.

Police sources allege the man named John Ortega, 26, was found in the bathroom of a Queens shelter last week, according to the New York Post.  He was pronounced dead after he was transported to a hospital, according to law enforcement.

Ortega evidently arrived in New York City with his wife and child, according to NBC New York before tragically taking his own life.

“This is an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy, and we are working closely with the family to support them during this incredibly difficult time,” a city Department of Social Services spokeswoman named Neha Sharma said in a statement.

“These families are coming to New York City after a months-long harrowing journey, in some cases, still reeling from the trauma they experienced along the way. We recognize the very unique challenges asylum seekers are facing and we remain committed to continuing to build on our ongoing efforts and interagency coordination to connect these families and individuals to mental health supports as we help them stabilize their lives in a new country,” she added.

The agency refused to release further details of the suicide.

This is the second known suicide of an illegal immigrant in the last few months. Officials confirmed in September that a mother of two children took her own life at the Hollis Family Shelter in Queens. The woman’s 15-year-old son found her after she hung herself with a cord in the bathroom, according to the New York Daily News.

Leidy Paola Martinez Villalobos, 32, struggled with depression in New York City after being separated from her husband at the border, according to the media outlet.

Almost 200 illegal immigrants arrived in New York City from Texas on Monday at Port Authority Bus Terminal which is a literal drop in the bucket compared to the 2,500 a day crossing the border into El Paso, Texas. The city is bracing for a massive surge of illegal immigrants following the end of Title 42 pandemic-related restrictions at the southern border.

Mayor Eric Adams is warning New Yorkers to brace themselves for possible cuts to services due to the expense of accommodating migrants.

A day earlier, Adams said officials at the state and federal level have “mostly ignored” pleas for money and support, noting the shelter systems are full and at a breaking point as migrants flood the city.

The latest illegal immigrant death comes amid the city’s ongoing shelter crisis. As of Thursday, almost 65,000 people were in the city’s shelters, 42% more than the same time a year ago, according to NBC New York.

New York City has received over 31,000 migrants and it is expected that there will be at least 1,000 new arrivals each week if Title 42 ends.
