Singer and actress Selena Gomez is tired of the fakeness.
In a new TikTok released on Wednesday, she made no bones about how “real stomachs” are coming back into style, so there’s no need to suck it in anymore, ladies!
The video itself shows her lounging in a one-piece swimsuit, lip-synching to a sound telling her to “suck it in.” After being body-shamed for gaining weight during her battle with Lupus, which was so severe it required her to undergo chemotherapy, Gomez is taking back her body.
The TikTok video is a fiercely body-positive message and has amassed nearly 15 million plays since it was posted:
The comments were overwhelmingly supportive of both Gomez and the message that you don’t have to be a Victoria’s Secret model to be able to feel good in your own skin. It was because of her struggles that she took four years away from the internet, but is now back and refusing to accept any hateful rhetoric about her body.
In a similar clip posted in April, Gomez wagged her finger at body shamers, explaining that missing out on her favorite foods just to be skinny isn’t a tradeoff that she finds to be worth it. Why? Because no matter what she does, people are going to have something to say about it.
“So I be trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack in the Box and I got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich,” she said in a clip. “’You’re too small. You’re too big. That doesn’t fit. Meh, meh, meh, meh.’”
She ended by telling people “I’m perfect the way I am,” a bold and positive message for someone who has struggled with image-related bullying.
Gomez has also taken her love life offline. Since her breakup with fellow singer Justin Bieber, she has kept her romantic journey low-key. This flies in the face of traditional internet culture, which emphasizes sharing every aspect of your life with complete strangers, all day every day.
