Martin Brundle, a former race car driver-turned-broadcaster, made an epic blunder Sunday during the coverage of the Miami Grand Prix that he will not live down anytime soon.
Engaged in a grid walk, which is also done in NASCAR, Brundle was looking for celebrities and other famous people for quick impromptu interviews before the race and the Sky Sports host thought he had spotted Patrick Mahomes, the star NFL quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs when in reality he had his eye on college basketball star Paolo Banchero.
“Patrick!” Brundle called out, as he gave chase. “I don’t think he can hear me. Patrick!”
Banchero kept walking because… well, his name is not Patrick. But a determined Brundle finally got his attention, asking: “What do you think of this atmosphere?”
“This is crazy,” Banchero replied. “I’ve never been to an F1 race.”

It quickly dawned on Brundle that he was not talking to Mahomes — his first clue might have been that Mahomes is 6’3 and Banchero is 6’10.
“It’s not Patrick, that’s why he ignored me in the beginning,” Brundle said. “What is your name, sir?”
After Banchero identified himself, Brundle offered a sheepish apology, explaining to the basketball star that he thought he was someone else before blaming the person in his ear
“Little bit of misinformation in the ears there,” he offered, wiping the egg off his face.
Turns out, Brundle’s overall day on the grid did not go too well. Here’s another example of his encounters:

In the face of all the mockery, Brundle took to Twitter later in the day to explain just how much he dislikes doing the grid walks.
“There’s a reason why I’ve never watched back an F1 gridwalk in a quarter of a century of doing them. You have no idea how much I dislike doing them but somehow those crazy moments have defined my professional career 🤔. Oh well, that’s the way it is,” he tweeted.
