The man accused of shooting two police officers in Newark, New Jersey was arrested Wednesday, authorities announced, having been at-large since the Tuesday incident.

Newark police officers arrested Kendall Howard, 30, at about 11:10 a.m. local time at the residential building where the shooting occurred, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens reported Wednesday. The shooting occurred Tuesday after officers encountered Howard, who was already wanted in connection with a different shooting on Oct. 28, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka revealed, according to CNN.

“They gave him instructions; there was a brief altercation; the gentleman pulled a gun out, shot two police officers at close range,” Baraka said, the outlet reported. “Gunshot was returned – fire was returned. The gentleman retreated into the building.”

Howard was charged with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possessing a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The injured officers are in stable condition and expected to fully recover, according to Stephens.

Other officers and a civilian came to the wounded officers’ aid as shots were being fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage revealed Wednesday.

“This is the true collaboration and the support we have from the community,” Frage said. “That’s what we’ve been trying to mend the past several years, to help build the trust between law enforcement and the communities that we serve.”

It was not confirmed whether Howard was a resident of the building.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office sent the Daily Caller News Foundation a press release about the case.
