Teen mom tosses newborn baby into dumpster in repulsive video footage

A newborn baby is in stable condition at a Texas hospital after being found in a dumpster hours after being tossed inside by a woman later identified as his mother.

Shocking surveillance video captured the scene as a woman pulled up in a car in broad daylight outside of a New Mexico Rig Outfitters store and simply tossed a black plastic bag into the dumpster and then drove off.

The Hobbs Police Department charged the mother, 18-year-old Alexis Avila, with attempted murder and child abuse after reviewing video footage from last Friday. She reportedly confessed to the crime, Fox News reported.

“I got a call about 8:30 on Friday, and Hobbs PD said, ‘Hey Joe are your cameras working out back?’” store owner Joe Imbriale told Fox News Digital. “They said we have a crime scene.”

“Close to six hours later, the cameras show a group of people fishing through the dumpster and pulling the baby out. They had heard the baby crying inside, Imbriale said,” Fox News reported.

Three people who were scavenging in the dumpsters reportedly heard the sounds and fished out the newborn baby boy who was still in the trash bag, wrapped in a “dirty, wet towel” and covered in dried blood, Acting Hobbs Police Chief August Fons said at a news briefing Monday afternoon. He said the newborn’s umbilical cord was still attached.

Michael Green, Hector Jasso and April Nuttall were identified by police as the Good Samaritans who likely saved the baby’s life.

“Their collective quick response to this emergency, including notification of 911, was absolutely pivotal in saving this baby’s life,” Fons said.

The store owner recounted to Fox News Digital how the police contacted him to review his store’s surveillance footage.

“They said we’re looking for somebody that dumped a black garbage bag in your dumpster, and I knew right then, I turned to the office and said, ‘Please don’t tell me it’s a baby,’” Imbriale said.

“The baby’s still alive. Don’t worry,” one of the officers assured him and his emotional staff.

The 18-year-old mother was located and charged by police though they would not release the name of the baby’s father because he is reportedly underage, according to Fons.

According to Fox News:

He said Avila told investigators that she did not know she was pregnant until last week when she sought treatment for abdominal pain. She also told police she ended her relationship with the suspected father back in August.

Avila’s mother, Martha Avila, told detectives that she’d banned the ex-boyfriend from their home in June after he allegedly “battered” her daughter.

Avila told police she gave birth to the boy in her parents’ bathroom and panicked. She allegedly stuffed the baby inside two plastic bags, one with other trash, and left it in the dumpster.

Police noted that the temperature was around 36 degrees that night. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital and later reportedly transported to one in Lubbock, Texas where he is said to be in stable condition.
