‘They want a divorce’: Trump, Musk discuss media efforts to create a split

Previewing a sit down with the president and his head of DOGE, Fox News host Sean Hannity probed a response on a corporate media-driven effort for “a divorce.”

“They want you two to start hating each other.”

In recent days, the Oval Office has been the backdrop for a highlight reel of moments featuring both President Donald Trump and Elon Musk shutting down tired attempts to sell narratives. Responding specifically to the suggestion that talking heads were vying to drive a wedge between the influential leaders, the nonplussed commander-in-chief remarked, “I see it all the time.”

“You’re both aware, you have to be keenly aware, that the media and the punditry class…I think you’ve proven they have no power anymore because they threw everything they had at you and they didn’t win,” began the host of “Hannity” who called out, “And that was, you know, The New York Times, Washington Post, three networks, every late night comedy show, two cable channels — they just, they threw everything: lawfare, weaponization.”

“And now I see they want you two — they want a divorce. They want you two to start hating each other. And they try, oh, ‘President Elon Musk’ for example. You do know that they’re doing that to you?” he asked.

“Oh, I see it all the time. They tried it. Then they stopped,” said Trump. “They have many different things of hatred.”

“Actually, Elon called me. He said, you know, they’re trying to drive us apart. I said, absolutely. No, they said, ‘We have breaking news. Donald Trump has ceded control of the presidency to Elon Musk. President Musk will be attending a cabinet meeting tonight at eight o’clock.’ And I say, it’s just so obvious,” continued the GOP leader. “They’re so bad at it. I used to think they were good at it. They’re actually bad at it because if they were good at it, I’d never be president.”

Explaining his rationale, the president expressed, “Because I think nobody in history has ever gotten more bad publicity than me. I could do the greatest things — I get 98% bad publicity — I could do, outside of you and a few of your very good friends, right? It’s like the craziest thing. But you know what I have learned, Elon? The people are smart. They get it.”

“Yeah, they do actually,” the head of the Department of Government Efficiency agreed. Musk further stated, “Yeah” and “Yes,” as the president noted, “They get it…They really see what’s happening.”

Leftist hyperbole had been unrelenting since the world’s richest man came out in support of Trump, especially after it was made clear that he intended to play an active role in the administration toward doing away with the bureaucratic relics that have furthered waste, abuse, and alleged fraud with taxpayer money.

As various groups court-shopped for activist judges to impede the administration, another fearmongering claim dropped from Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden (D) after DOGE employees had made their first appearance at the IRS.

“That means Musk’s henchmen are in a position to dig through a trove of data about every taxpayer in America,” the senator suggested on X. “And if your refund is delayed, they could very well be the reason.”

Just as Wyden’s scare tactic had been laughed off on social media, reactions to Trump supported the observation that “The people are smart. They get it,” ahead of the Tuesday release of the full interview featuring the “Dynamic Duo.”
