Tim Scott’s quick-thinking one-line response to Trump’s awkward question gets mixed reviews

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) was in New Hampshire as Donald Trump celebrated his Republican primary win over his last remaining rival Nikki Haley, and the senator dropped a one-liner that brought cheers from the crowd after Trump suggested that he “must really hate” Haley.

“We do go to South Carolina, where we have done really well, where I’ve done well. We have a great governor and lieutenant governor, great everything because almost every one of them have endorsed me,” Trump said, continuing a practice of deeming all who back him as being great, while condemning all who don’t.

“Two great senators, which is hard,” he continued. “I mean, did you ever think that she would actually appoint you, Tim?”

Trump was talking about then-Gov. Haley in the question he directed at Scott, who was standing behind him on the stage.

After acknowledging that Scott just endorsed him, the former president said, “You must really hate her.”

“No, it’s a shame. It’s a shame,” he added, as the crowd laughed.

At this point, Scott approached the microphone prompting Trump to mischievously say, “Uh oh!

“I just love you!” the GOP senator said to the amusement of the crowd.

“That’s why he’s a great politician,” an appreciative Trump quipped.

The feel-good moment played well in a roomful of Trump supporters, but it did not go over quite so well on social media.

Here’s a small sampling of some of the responses to the story from X:
