An overweight man who identifies as a so-called “transgender woman” has won a preliminary Miss America pageant in New Hampshire.
“Brían Nguyen, 19, won Sunday night’s pageant to become ‘Miss Greater Derry 2023,’ which awards the winner a crown, title and scholarship,” The National Desk reported.
Run by the Miss Derry Scholarship Program, the pageant is “a preliminary event to the Miss NH and Miss America Pageant,” according to the organization’s website.
Nguyen is therefore now a Miss America title holder — the first transgender one ever, in fact.

In an Instagram post, Nguyen celebrated his victory.
“In the 100 year history of Miss America, I have officially become the FIRST transgender titleholder within the Miss America Organization No words can describe the feeling of having the opportunity to serve my community and represent my community for the very first time at Miss New Hampshire,” he wrote.
“I am so honored to be crowned your new Miss Greater Derry 2023, and I am thrilled to show you all what I have up my sleeves. This will be an amazing year,” Nguyen added.

But not everybody is celebrating. Many have been raising concerns about Miss America being co-opted by a biological man — and an overweight one at that.
“Would a biological woman who looked like that ever in a million years win a beauty pageant? Transwomen are being given awards over biological women simply to virtue signal,” one critic tweeted.
“Exactly my thought! The bio girls [biologically female girls] have to be thin and in good shape. They’d never win like that,” another added.

According to the “Miss Derry” website, this year the winner — Nguyen — was specifically granted a $7,500 scholarship.
“The Miss Derry Scholarship Program was created in 1986 as a community service project and incorporated in 1996*. It’s success has been greater than we imagined. In 2000 we awarded over $16,000 in scholarships, making us the 3rd highest awarding local pageant in the United States. In 2003 we awarded $28,450.00,” the website reads.
“The times have changed and our accounts have been affected by a slowly recovering economy. This year our Miss Derry Scholarship Program awarded $15,550.00 in scholarships with Miss Greater Derry receiving $7,500.00 in scholarship awards with her title. Since our inception, we have awarded $328,310.00 in scholarships,” it adds.
One big concern, obviously, is that biological women are now being denied earned scholarships because of men like Nguyen.
A similar phenomenon played out last year in college swimming, where “transgender woman” Lea Thomas kept decimating biologically female opponents.

The only thing that brought Thomas’ victory streak to an end was finally graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and moving on with life.
However, Thomas is now reportedly eyeing the Olympics, which too has become increasingly friendly to the “transgender” community in the past few years.
“Thomas wants to continue training through law school. Swimming at the 2024 Olympic trials is still a goal. If she meets the criteria to continue swimming in the women’s category, USA Swimming officials tell SI, they’ll have no issue with Thomas representing the United States in Paris,” Sports Illustrated magazine reported after interviewing Thomas in March of this year.
