Trump-endorsed candidate beats Liz Cheney in Wyoming GOP straw poll; trash-talk begins

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney was delivered a resounding defeat in a Republican Party straw poll in Wyoming, getting beaten by a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Trump endorsed GOP House candidate Harriet Hageman back in September in order to challenge Cheney in the Republican primary, which is eight months away. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has earned the ire of Trump and many Republicans after voting to impeach him and for serving on Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 Select Committee on the January 6 attack.

Cheney, who was removed from her leadership position in the House, was heartily defeated by Hageman in the straw poll held by Wyoming Republican State Central Committee on Saturday, according to the Casper Star Tribune.

“The secret ballot of party activists awarded Hageman 59 votes, Cheney six, state Sen. Anthony Bouchard, R-Cheyenne, two and Denton Knapp one. The vote comes eight months before the GOP primary,” the outlet reported, noting that the Republican Party of Wyoming is not allowed to endorse candidates in the primary election.

“I think it’s a good sign. It’s not an endorsement, but these are the county activists” Hageman told the Star-Tribune, which noted that 71 of 74 members of the committee voted – that included three of Hageman’s family members.

The newspaper noted that Cheney’s anti-Trump actions and remarks have “made her reelection effort the most difficult of her political career. Previously, she’s coasted to reelection. This time, she faces a formidable challenge from Hageman, a lawyer and 2018 gubernatorial candidate.”

Some who were not too happy with the straw poll sounded off.

“This smells like an endorsement to me,” Natrona County Committeeman Joe McGinley said. “Whether that is the true intention of the state … or not, that’s what it appears to be.”

Cheney campaign spokesperson Jeremy Adler responded to the vote, saying, “The only elections that matter are in August and November.”

Trump backed Hageman last September in a strong statement.

“I strongly endorse Republican House of Representatives Candidate Harriet Hageman from Wyoming who is running against warmonger and disloyal Republican, Liz Cheney,” he said.

“Harriet Hageman adores the Great State of Wyoming, is strong on Crime and Borders, powerfully supports the Second Amendment, loves our Military and our Vets, and will fight for Election Integrity and Energy Independence (which Biden has already given up). Unlike RINO Liz Cheney, Harriet is all in for America First. Harriet has my Complete and Total Endorsement in replacing the Democrats number one provider of sound bites, Liz Cheney,” he continued in the statement which Cheny tweeted along with her challenge.

Hageman was a GOP gubernatorial in Wyoming in 2018 but lost in the primary. The attorney seemed to take on a more subdued reaction to the straw poll.

“There will be lots of polls over the next eight months, and they will all show different things,” Hageman said.
