Criminal justice reforms championed by much of the Democratic Party continue to be at the forefront of the ongoing crime surge across America. Reforms that include the reduction of cash bail in many cases, and for some crimes the elimination of bail altogether, as the radical left in America decry structural racism in our criminal justice system.

One of the more heinous crimes in the news recently involved a Detroit man allegedly setting his six months pregnant girlfriend on fire, yet the suspect was granted a $5,000 bond to be released from jail.

Devonne Marsh, who has a lengthy criminal record, was charged with setting fire to his girlfriend who is pregnant with twins, the Macomb Daily reported.

“How do you do this to another human being? It’s unimaginable,” Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said in a news release, according to the newspaper. “Just incredibly traumatic injuries. I just can’t imagine the pain she must be suffering.”

The woman, who was 27 weeks into her pregnancy with twins, suffered burns to over 60% of her body and could barely move, according to police. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Marsh, 42, was charged with kidnapping/abduction, aggravated/felonious assault, and violation of the controlled substance act, the Daily reported, adding that despite his criminal history, bond “was set at $50,000 or 10%, meaning he could get out of jail if he is able to post $5,000 bond.” He had an active arrest warrant when arrested, and has served time in prison for possession of a controlled substance, weapons/felony firearms, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The perp also absconded from probation out of the Macomb/Mount Clemens office in March 2020 — Marsh pleaded guilty to four counts of delivering more than 50 grams of cocaine in 2019 and was sentenced to two years probation, the Daily noted.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy told WWJ 950 radio she would be filing a motion to have his bail increased due to the severity of the crime after filing new charges. After an outcry over the case, Marsh was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery of a pregnant individual, domestic violence, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, delivery/manufacturing of controlled substances, felony possession, felonious assault and felony firearm.

“His original bond was woefully inadequate, and we will be seeking a more appropriate bond given these charges,” said Worthy, a Democrat who had previously supported bail reform, to include ending cash bail.

Detroit police said they were acting on a tip and went to a residence to investigate allegations that a woman was being held against her will and tortured, and the discovered a 26-year-old female laying on a bed in the basement with severe burns on her legs and stomach. Marsh allegedly doused the victim with lighter fluid and then set her on fire after an argument.

The woman was reportedly afraid to report the attack for fear of retaliation from Marsh, but told police what has happened to her after they found her. Sgt. Kyla Williams, who supervises the department’s domestic violence unit, praised the victim for cooperating.

“I want to applaud her for coming forward. I want to again let her know that she is not alone,” Williams said. “She has the men and women of the Detroit Police Department to support her.”

The consequences of bail reform are being felt across the country as criminals are being turned out into the streets.

Last week, Brianna Kupfer, a 24-year-old UCLA graduate student, was stabbed to death as she worked alone in a high-end furniture store in Los Angeles. The suspect had a violent criminal record, including charges for gun crimes and an attack on a police officer, yet he was released in October 2020 on $1,000 bail after a misdemeanor arrest that prosecutors ended up not pursuing.
