While the DC political class may be eager to celebrate Elon Musk’s announcement this week that his time as a “special government employee” with the Trump administration is coming to a close, President Donald Trump put a damper on their joy when he let it be known that Musk will “always be with us.”
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” the Tesla CEO posted late Wednesday on X.
Trump took to Truth Social on Thursday to announce a Friday press conference with Musk, but said the billionaire entrepreneur is “not really” leaving.
“I am having a Press Conference tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. EST, with Elon Musk, at the Oval Office. This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific! See you tomorrow at the White House,” the president wrote.
As a designated special government employee heading up the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk is limited to 130 days over 365 days. Top Musk lieutenant Steve Davis is also leaving, as is top adviser Katie Miller and DOGE general counsel James Burnham, according to a White House official.
Vice President JD Vance supported the president’s stance during an appearance on Newsmax.
VP VANCE: THE ELON ERA ISN’T OVER, HE’LL REMAIN AN ADVISOR

“I think there, there’s also an effort by the media to sort of say the Elon era is over, and I think that’s actually totally wrong,” the vice president said. “Now, he has obviously a day job and he’s gotta go back to his day job to run his companies. But the DOGE effort will continue. Elon will continue to be an important advisor for both me and the president.”
“And most importantly, the job, the job of making the government more efficient and not wasting people’s money, that has to continue,” Vance said. “I think it’s one of the most important mandates that we got from the American people and we are going to keep executing on that mandate.”
Time will tell to what extent that effort continues, but Musk found himself under serious fire from Democrats and the media for trying to expose fraud and waste within the federal government. Activists on the left targeted Tesla vehicles with vandalism in an attempt to damage the company by dissuading people from purchasing the vehicles. In the end, Musk’s efforts have been downplayed by the media and he has been criticized for falling short of his goal of finding $1 trillion in budget cuts.
As for who will be implementing the DOGE agenda going forward, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that others in the administration, including President Trump, will be responsible, according to CBS News.
“The DOGE leaders are each and every member of the president’s Cabinet and the president himself, who is wholeheartedly committed to cutting waste, fraud and abuse from our government,” Leavitt said when asked who would be heading up the department.
