President Donald Trump announced he will be bringing back Columbus Day “from the ashes” in a stinging rebuke of leftist cancel culture.
The president addressed the holiday and the reputation of the Italian explorer and navigator in a Truth Social post on Sunday, announcing a “major comeback” after Columbus was deemed persona non grata by the left. The October federal holiday was effectively replaced as Indigenous Peoples Day began to be celebrated on the same day after a proclamation in 2021 by then-President Biden.
“I’m bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes. The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much,” Trump wrote.

“They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but ‘WOKE,’ or even worse, nothing at all!” he added.
“Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!” Trump proclaimed.

Biden’s presidential proclamation in 2021 declared, “For generations, Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures.”
“Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society,” he added.
During Trump’s first term in office, he commemorated Columbus Day and praised the 15th-century explorer in multiple proclamations.
Christopher Columbus’s spirit of determination & adventure has provided inspiration to generations of Americans. On #ColumbusDay, we honor his remarkable accomplishments as a navigator, & celebrate his voyage into the unknown expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. https://t.co/Mg3dxRfPuN

“Columbus’s spirit of determination and adventure has provided inspiration to generations of Americans. On Columbus Day, we honor his remarkable accomplishments as a navigator and celebrate his voyage into the unknown expanse of the Atlantic Ocean,” he said in a 2018 proclamation.
“His expedition formed the initial bond between Europe and the Americas, and changed the world forever,” he added at the time. “Today, in that spirit, we continue to seek new horizons for greater opportunity and further discovery on land, in sea, and in space.”
The Italian American Civil Rights League and others celebrated Trump’s “promises kept” in reaction to his latest message.
“Columbus Day is back — and so is American pride. President Trump is standing up for our history, our traditions, and the millions who cherish them,” Fox News host Laura Ingraham wrote on X.
The Italian American Civil Rights League was the first major Italian American organization to endorse President Trump in the 2024 election.
He told us when we endorsed him he would SAVE COLUMBUS DAY!

A day after returning home from Italy, President Trump just reinstated Columbus Day as a federal holiday in America.
The Italian-American community in America has never had a greater ally.
I often tell people Trump is actually our first Italian president. This is exactly why!
