A meltdown is reportedly underway at Vanity Fair after the new owner proposed putting the first lady on the cover.
While this wouldn’t be an issue if the president were a Democrat, First Lady Melania Trump is a target of the left due to her marriage to President Donald Trump, whom they hate more than anything. Because of this, opportunities that are usually afforded to first ladies have been denied to Melania Trump, and apparently, even the idea of equity is enough to send some employees into a rage.
The magazine’s global editorial director, Mark Guiducci, is looking to cement his place in the publication, but he is reportedly already facing a mutiny.
“I will walk out the motherf–king door, and half my staff will follow me,” the Daily Mail reports, quoting one of the staffers.
“We are not going to normalize this despot and his wife; we’re just not going to do it. We’re going to stand for what’s right,” said another. “If I have to work bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s, I’ll do it. If [Guiducci] puts Melania on the cover, half of the editorial staff will walk out, I guarantee it.”
However, other employees claim their colleagues are all bluster and wouldn’t give up their cushy jobs over something like putting the first lady on the cover.
“It’s all talk. If they put her on the cover, people will protest and gripe about it, but I don’t see anyone quitting such a prestigious job over that,” one employee scoffed. “Honestly, there will be people who push back, but it’s ultimately Mark’s decision. He’s the one who will sink or swim over that choice, not the rest of us.”
The first lady was infamously snubbed by the Conde Nast publication during her husband’s first term, which was a stark contrast to the previous administration, as former First Lady Michelle Obama was featured a whopping three times.
But even if Guiducci has his way, there is still no guarantee that Melania Trump will even want to participate, as she has expressed no interest in being on magazine covers.
“Look, I’ve been there on the covers — on the cover of Vogue, on the covers of many magazines before … We have so many other important things to do than to be on the cover of any magazine,” she told Fox News. “I think that life would not change for anybody if I’m on the cover.”
