WH officials reportedly considering pre-emptive pardon for Gen. Milley and more

Concerns that President-elect Donald Trump will make good on campaign promises reportedly have White House officials scrambling to protect potential targets.

According to a Washington Post report published Thursday, President Joe Biden and his staffers are considering pre-emptive pardons for people they believe Trump may want to look into during his upcoming term. Among the names being tossed around are Anthony Fauci, Gen. Mark Milley, Senator-elect Adam Schiff, and Liz Cheney.

“The discussions, first reported by Politico, were confirmed by two people familiar with the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private talks,” WaPo wrote. “The effort is being led by White House chief of staff Jeff Zients and White House counsel Ed Siskel, the people said, suggesting that the issue is being treated seriously at the highest levels of the administration.”

While it’s unclear whether Biden will choose to pardon any or all of the names, allies of the president have encouraged him to issue more broad pardons like the one he gave to his son Hunter Biden. This would exempt any official chosen from being prosecuted for any federal crime they may or may not have committed during a specific time frame, whether the crime is currently known or not.

Gen. Milley, specifically, has reportedly called Trump a “fascist” and engaged in two secret calls to a top Chinese official, according to journalist Bob Woodward. One call was placed prior to the 2020 election, and the other came after the events of January 6. He admitted to Congress that he had phoned People’s Liberation Army Gen. Li Zuocheng to say that he would personally warn the country if an American attack was launched in the last few days of Trump’s first presidential term.

Trump responded to the news with a Truth Social post in which he referred to Milley’s actions as a “treasonous act … so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH!” This has prompted fears that a second presidential term would result in a possible prosecution of Milley, who reportedly never informed Trump that these phone calls were made.
