A Washington, D.C. lawyer who worked in the administrations of former President Bill Clinton and former President Barack Obama was reported dead after suffering a rare, but fatal accident aboard a flight Friday.
Dana J. Hyde, 55, was onboard a private jet bound for Leesburg, Virginia from Keene, New Hampshire with her husband, Jonathan Chambers, and one of their two sons when unexpected turbulence led to an emergency landing. According to the Connecticut State Police (CSP), they were called to respond to passengers in need of medical assistance landing at Bradly International Airport a little before four in the afternoon.
In their statement released Monday, law enforcement provided a positive identification for Hyde who had been transported to Hartford’s Saint Francis Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

According to CSP, both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FBI have begun investigations into the incident and a statement from the former said, “Investigators are now looking at a reported trim issue that occurred prior to the inflight upset. They will continue to learn more after they analyze information from the flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder and other sources of information like weather data.”

Hyde’s LinkedIn profile, which has since been taken down, identified her as the co-chair of the Aspen Institute’s Partnership for an Inclusive Economy. She also served as counsel for the 9/11 Commission, as a special assistant to the deputy U.S. attorney general and as a special assistant to the president for cabinet affairs during Clinton’s tenure as well as being an associate director at the Office of Management and Budget and a senior policy adviser at the State Department during the Obama administration.
According to the executive director of the Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a former NTSB chair, deaths from turbulence are extremely rare. “I can’t remember the last fatality due to turbulence,” the Daily Mail reported his saying.
The outlet also confirmed the plane was owned by Chambers company, Conexon, through spokesperson Abby Carere who said in an email, “We can confirm that the aircraft was owned by Conexon and that Dana Hyde was the wife of Conexon partner Jonathan Chambers. Jonathan and his son were on the flight also and not injured in the incident.”
The family had traveled to New Hampshire to look at colleges for their son.
In an email to employees and clients of Conexon, Chambers memorialized his wife and said, “Dana was the best person I ever knew. She was a wonderful mother to our boys and she was accomplished professionally. She loved and was beloved.”
Hyde’s death is the latest in a slew of tragic deaths of individuals connected to the Clinton administration. Recently, the death of an aide to the former president, Mark Middleton, was determined to be a suicide despite his being found tied by the neck to a tree with a gunshot wound to the chest without any gun present at the crime scene.
