Deflection and obfuscation were compounded with a wild claim about Nicolás Maduro during a Fox News debate pitting an immigrant against a Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member.
“You have to answer the Venezuela question.”
Hours before DSA-backed candidates would score some more victories during the 2026 primary elections, Fox News’ Martha MacCallum afforded time for a leftist to debate her organization’s radical agenda. During the back and forth that featured anti-capitalist talking points and support for defunding the police, an actual Venezuelan immigrant was left gobsmacked that the socialist suggested Maduro was “democratically -elected.”
Sharing a clip from the exchange during “The Story,” Manhattan Institute fellow Daniel Di Martino remarked on DSA National Political Committee member Frances Gill’s position, “The socialist actually had the guts to tell ME that Maduro was democratically-elected. This is how you know they will rig elections if they get into power.”
In the segment, Gill contended, “I do not support the overthrow of democratically elected leaders anywhere in the country.”

Leading up to the statement, Di Martino had called out how socialism is “not accountable to the consumer” and reminded that government bailouts are what happened in Venezuela to sustain the failing programs.
“They destroyed the richest country in Latin America, and the DSA is an organization that supported the destruction of Venezuela. Your team, Frances, traveled to Venezuela to support the dictator of my country that eight million of us fled, and then now you come to America and say, ‘Let’s do it all over again,'” he said, prompting Gill to reply, “Yes, I mean, the capitalists are destroying my country of America.”
Interjecting, MacCallum reminded, “But Frances, you have to answer the Venezuela question, Frances. He lived it, okay? His family had to flee it because turning it over to socialism destroyed the country, and people had less healthcare, less housing — all the things that you seem to think socialism will bring — we watched it all, south of our border in Venezuela, and we saw what happened.”
“Tell me why you don’t take anything away from that lesson?” asked the host.
Seemingly unaware of the self-explanatory nature, Gill went on to say, “If socialism is innately so dangerous and so bad, why does the U.S. expend so much energy sanctioning these countries and overthrowing governments and attempting to overturn the democratic rule of the people?”
It was at that point that the Manhattan Institute fellow juxtaposed opposition to the arrest of Maduro with leftist fervor to see Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who was elected –behind bars, “Frances, I would think that you would support it because you say we should arrest Benjamin Netanyahu. So, I imagine you support the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, who is in a Brooklyn jail after being lawfully indicted.”
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the discussion, Gill appeared unwilling to answer the question as to whether or not rapists and murderers should be jailed, and whether illegal aliens who do the same should be deported.
“I mean, you know who I think should go to prison are the people who are protecting Jeffrey Epstein,” she said before demonizing billionaires.
“Just answer the question!”
