A dem operative the whole time? Liz Cheney backs Dem incumbent in tight House race … in Michigan!

Soon-to-be former Congresswoman Liz Cheney weighed into one of the most competitive House races in the country on Thursday — on the side of the Democratic candidate, of course.

The Wyoming Republican who was badly trounced in a GOP primary by a Trump-backed candidate, endorsed U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., on Thursday and plans to hit the campaign trail next week in Lansing, Mich., to stump for the Democratic incumbent.

“While Elissa and I have our policy disagreements, at a time when our nation is facing threats at home and abroad, we need serious, responsible, substantive members like Elissa in Congress,” Cheney said in a statement released by the Slotkin campaign. “I encourage all voters in the 7th district — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents — to support her in this election.”

Slotkin is being challenged by Republican state Sen. Tom Barrett, whose sin in the eyes of Cheney is that he raised doubts about the 2020 election results, and was one of 11 Michigan senators who sent a letter to Congress asking lawmakers to investigate voter fraud claims — Michigan was one of a select number of battleground states at the center of former President Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud.

“At a moment when the very heart of our democracy is being challenged, Rep. Cheney’s voice has been critical,” Slotkin said in the release. “Rep. Cheney has shown tremendous leadership over the last two years, and while we certainly don’t agree on every issue, I look forward to welcoming her to Michigan’s 7th district next week to discuss the points where all Americans can leave politics aside and put our country above all else.”

Barrett responded to the endorsement by calling attention to a strange phenomenon taking place in America over the Russia-Ukraine conflict — the coming together of neo-con war hawks and Democrats in furtherance of military conflict.

“My entire adult life has been committed to service in the Army, and sadly I’ve lost too many friends in America’s endless wars. Now, establishment warhawks like Liz Cheney and Elissa Slotkin are standing together because I oppose their senseless thirst for more foreign entanglements,” the GOP candidate said in a statement.

“Slotkin has already said she would commit US soldiers to combat with China so it’s no surprise the Cheney family would join her,” Barrett added. “Slotkin can keep Cheney while I work to keep America out of war.”

The latest move by Cheney, which comes on the heels of her stating that if she was a resident of Arizona that she would vote for Democrat Katie Hobbs, who refuses to participate in a gubernatorial debate with Republican Kari Lake, suggests that there’s something deeper at play in challenging the Republican Party than a moral disgust of Donald Trump.
