Aggressive research monkeys escape from overturned truck in Mississippi

A truck hauling rhesus monkeys described as “aggressive” overturned in Mississippi, sending primates everywhere.

One is reportedly still on the loose, and many have been “destroyed” after local authorities were told that the primates posed a health threat. According to Tulane University, where the animals were being hauled from, the monkeys “are provided to other research orgs to advance science” and belonged to a third party.

“Non-human primates at the [Tulane National Biological Research Center] are provided to other research orgs to advance science. The primates in question belong to another entity and aren’t infectious. We’re actively collaborating with local authorities and will send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed,” the statement read.

But according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, which responded to the crash and subsequent primate escape, the driver of the truck told them something totally different.

“Tulane has released the statement below,” the department writes in their post. “The driver of the truck told local law enforcement that the monkeys were dangerous and posed a threat to humans. We took the appropriate actions after being given that information from the person transporting the monkeys. He also stated that you had to wear PPE equipment to handle the monkeys.”

It is reported that the authorities were told the monkeys were carrying “hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID,” prompting them to respond to the primates’ escape with force. According to Fox News, all but one of the monkeys has been “destroyed” by the department.

“We are continuing to look for the one monkey that is still on the loose,” reads another Facebook post from the local police. “Do not approach the monkeys if you see one. Call 911.”

Tulane University officials “did not confirm the number of monkeys that escaped, the number of monkeys killed or the number of monkeys that remain caged,” Fox reported.

“Monkeys can carry diseases transmissible to humans, including tuberculosis, and Tulane National Primate Research Center, where these monkeys were trucked from, has had disease outbreaks of pathogens deadly to humans in its monkey colony,” PETA’s Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo told Fox News Digital. “This is the risk the greedy monkey experimentation industry has chosen for the public, so they can line their pockets while these sensitive monkeys crisscross American highways in unmarked trucks.”
