CNN host Anderson Cooper was visibly stunned when his guest expressed sympathy for Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA).
Since the emergence of sexual harassment/assault allegations against Swalwell, there has been a whirlwind of activity. He denied everything at first, then he dropped out of the California gubernatorial race. The next step was to resign from his current seat in the House while maintaining that the most serious allegations, in which he allegedly sexually assaulted a staffer while she was intoxicated, were untrue. Even his own “best friend” appears to have turned on him, but at least he has the sympathy of former Trump White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci.

“I just got to ask you first about Eric Swalwell announcing he‘s leaving Congress,” Cooper said.
“Listen, I’m going to– I’m going to play to the human side of that story with his wife, Brittany, and his three children. I would just say to Eric, you know, get this thing fixed up at home, the best he possibly can. I think it was very smart for him to leave Congress and the race behind him. But work on your personal life, and by the way, my heart goes out to him,” Scaramucci said. “You may remember this, when I got fired from the White House. Deidre and I were fighting with each other. We were able to repair our marriage, thank God. So I would just say to Eric, family first and, you know, get it together. You know, that would be my message.”
“He’s also facing very serious allegations,” Cooper pointed out, perhaps reminding his guest that it is a bad look to express sympathy for someone accused of sexual assault.
“Well, listen, you know, it‘s hard for sometimes these politicians, Anderson, but you know, get more honest more quickly. I listened to your last interview. He was denying, denying. And now he seems to be widening the level of truth, if you will. And I would just tell him, get the truth out there, and get this, get this cleared up and behind you. And if those allegations are true, then you got to face the music,” Scaramucci responded.
Swalwell may be resigning his position, but he is still facing allegations from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the House Ethics Committee, which have taken an interest in the claims against the congressman. It remains to be seen whether any of these allegations could result in criminal charges or if Swalwell will just disappear into the political background without any real consequences.
