West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice took a colorful shot at critics of his state such as singer and actress Bette Midler who fired back on social media on Friday.
“I’d say his dog’s — would make a better Governor than him!” she tweeted, lambasting the Republican governor who essentially made her the butt of his joke during his State of the State address.
Midler’s name began trending on Twitter after Justice’s unforgettable message to her and other critics who have maligned his state and its people.
“Absolutely too many people doubted us,” the governor said Thursday as he wrapped up his annual speech before a joint session of the West Virginia legislature.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice flashed his pet bulldog’s butt to critics during his state address on Thursday, telling Bette Midler and others to “kiss her hiney.”

“They never believed in West Virginia. They never believed in West Virginia, that would we do it,” he continued with his pet bulldog alongside, adding that “they told every bad joke in the world about us.”
“And so from that standpoint, Babydog tells Bette Midler and all of those out there, kiss her hiney,” he concluded, lifting the dog and showing her behind.
The move earned him applause, laughter and even a standing ovation from some though not all were happy with Justice’s sense of humor. The governor had been reacting to criticism from Midler last month when she vented at U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who sunk his party’s attempt to remove the Senate filibuster in order to pass a so-called votings rights bill.
The actress had called the people of West Virginia “Poor, illiterate and strung out.”
What #JoeManchin, who represents a population smaller than Brooklyn, has done to the rest of America, who wants to move forward, not backward, like his state, is horrible. He sold us out. He wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out.

She later offered a sort of apology.
I apologize to the good people of WVA for my last outburst. I’m just seeing red; #JoeManchin and his whole family are a criminal enterprise. Is he really the best WV has to offer its own citizens? Surely there’s someone there who has the state’s interests at heart, not his own!

Justice’s speech telling Midler and others they could kiss his dog’s “hiney” prompted her tweet in which she added a chart showing West Virginia’s rankings on education, health care and the economy, among other things.
BTW, here are the state rankings of all the areas and agencies for which the so-called “Governor” of WVA, #JimJustice, is responsible. Judging from these rankings, I’d say his dog’s ass would make a better Governor than him! pic.twitter.com/TJAB3oj5VV

Midler continued her response by retweeting posts slamming Justice like one that said “Here we can see a dog’s ——-. Right next to it is the butt of Jim Justice’s dog” and “Way to go, Jim Justice! Nothing like proving Bette Midler right on national television. Did you REALLY show us your dog’s ——-? REALLY? Thanks for conforming to all our worst stereotypes about Southern dum— men.”
