A conservative commentator sparked a war of words on Twitter/X this week by making a polarizing proclamation about men.
Liz Wheeler, who used to be with OANN but currently hosts a podcast on YouTube, alleged in a post published Monday that “playing video games” is the “least attractive” hobby that a man might possess.

This is true. Men playing video games is peak unattractive. Beyond red flag. Like dealbreaker zone. It’s weird that so many dudes don’t get this. pic.twitter.com/nJcNiVPr8T

As seen above, Wheeler offered no sourcing for her chart, which also listed “magic tricks,” “building model trains,” and even “bird watching” as unattractive hobbies.
In additional tweets, Wheeler doubled down on her proclamation.

And obviously we’re not talking about Pac-Man or Tetris or an arcade game once is a while.

To say that the post triggered backlash would be an understatement. Viewed over 18 million times, the post has attracted tens of thousands of critical comments from mainly men but also some women like former National Rifle Association spokesperson Dana Loesch.
“I love playing games,” Loesch tweeted. “Waiting for the new Space Marines. Fired up COD Cold War Zombies the other day for nostalgia. Nothing wrong with games — or any hobby in healthy doses — especially when you can do four player family co-op.”
Note what she wrote about “healthy doses,” i.e., doing things in moderation.

Nah, video games are cool. Men have a lot of crap on their plates, and if a guy takes care of business in every other arena, why the hell shouldn’t he play video games?

Most of these are awesome like I love model trains & collecting figurines.
The bird watching hate doesn’t even make sense because it just sounds sweet like something most women like me would find endearing— Katie (@ktwagie) August 21, 2024
Liz this post of yours is not the win you think it is
Women don’t get to dictate what hobbies guys are allowed to have. Just as guys don’t get to dictate what hobbies we are allowed to have.
This post shows your narcissism

Gamers, please ignore her.
I personally would rather him be in the privacy of his own home doing whatever he needs to decompress from a hard day at work than be out at a bar getting drunk any day of the week. And if that includes gaming, so be it.

My fiancé and I MET in a video game and now we’re having a baby. Gaming with him is my FAVORITE thing to do. Everyone is allowed to have their own individual hobbies and interests, don’t make men feel like shit for that. There’s plenty of women who love men who game.

The male response has been a tad bit less polite and more aggressive, with some men pummeling Wheeler for her “horrible take.”
“Liz what a guy does to blow off steam shouldn’t matter,” one male critic wrote. “As long as he is a good man works hard and provides WGAF if he plays Madden, or should he just hand his balls over and go antiquing with you on the weekends. Literally a horrible take on your part.”

That’s fine. We’d rather play video games than deal with modern women.

A woman giving me shit for my hobbies is peak unattractive. I’ll do what I goddamn please

Women like you assume your company is more interesting and valuable than a good video game. You are incorrect.

Strongly disagree. I’ve been a gamer for more than 45 years. Started with Pong. I can still remember our family buying that game console from Target. I play Rust these days. I’m a proud gamer. I’m also been married for 32 years, father to 6 and granddad to 2. Sit down Liz.

According to Statistica, as of this past summer, 48 percent of video gamers in the U.S. were women, while the remaining 52 percent were male. This brings the total to a whopping 212 million gamers in America.
