Biden vows to ‘shut down’ border if immigration legislation passes, but critics aren’t buying it

President Joe Biden has dubiously promised to “shut down the border” if Republicans give him what he wants.

But what he wants is for Republicans to throw their support behind a weak “bipartisan” immigration bill that would do very little to stymie the flow of illegal alien migrants across the southern U.S. border.

In fact, some critics say the bill would only incentivize more illegal migration by granting immediate work permits to every illegal alien migrant released into the U.S. interior.

The president nonetheless made his case in a statement published to the social media platform X late Friday evening.

Look:

“What’s been negotiated would – if passed into law – be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country,” the president began, referencing the border bill he wants Republicans to support.

Right off the bat he was lying. The policies contained in the bill aren’t close to as tough as the policies former President Donald Trump had used to keep the border tightly secure, including Remain in Mexico and Title 42.

“It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law,” the president continued.

Again he was lying. He already possesses the power to fix the border crisis by implementing Remain in Mexico and Title 42, among other strong policies.

“Further, Congress needs to finally provide the funding I requested in October to secure the border. This includes an additional 1,300 border patrol agents, 375 immigration judges, 1,600 asylum officers, and over 100 cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect and stop fentanyl at our southwest border,” the president concluded.

Notice how the bill would lead to the hiring of more asylum officers than border patrol agents. That’s no coincidence. As noted by critics, the bill is essentially designed to streamline the corrupted asylum process versus stopping the flow of illegal alien migrants across the border.

Responding to the president’s statement, critics pounced in droves, lecturing him about the reality of the situation — a reality that he refuses to acknowledge.

This sentiment is shared by House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, who’s indicated he has no intention of passing this supposed compromise.

“Johnson wrote a letter to his colleagues in the Senate signaling the legislation addressing the border and aid to Ukraine has no future in the House if Republicans there feel it doesn’t do enough to address the records numbers of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States,” according to Fox News.

“I wanted to provide a brief update regarding the supplemental and the border, since the Senate appears unable to reach any agreement. If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway,” the speaker wrote.

“I am emphasizing again today that House Republicans will vigorously oppose any new policy proposal from the White House or Senate that would further incentivize illegal aliens to break our laws,” he added.
