Bill Clinton says NYC needs to change laws to fix migrant problem

Former President Bill Clinton had a lot to say about the illegal immigrant crisis that threatens to cripple New York City, but none of it had anything to do with securing the border and putting an end to foreign invaders coming by the millions.

Clinton addressed the issue on 77 WABC radio’s “The Cats Roundtable” show, telling host John Catsimatidis he agreed with Gov. Kathy Hochul that New York City’s “Right to Shelter Law” must be changed — the long-standing law requires the asylum city to provide sheltering for the homeless, and with NYC reportedly absorbing more than 110,000 migrants since April 2022, this has become a major challenge.

“Gov. Hochul thinks it should be modified, and it probably should under the circumstances,” Clinton said. “It’s broken. We need to fix it. … It doesn’t make any sense.”

But the solution the former president proposes is to better facilitate the processing of illegal immigrants so they can quickly adapt to American life, which does nothing to deter the flood of humanity along our southern border.

“They come here, and we’re supposed to shelter people who can’t get work permits for six months,” he added. “We need to change that. They ought to work. They need to begin working, paying taxes, and paying their way. Most of these people have no interest in being on welfare.”

Clinton cited the low birth rate and labor shortages to suggest millions of invaders entering the country illegally is a good thing for America. He also proposes building housing for them — on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.

“The [US immigration] system is built to handle about 400,000. We should build more housing just over the Rio Grande, and Mexico, I think, would support that,” he said. “Keep people there, and let them in as quickly as possible if they are going someplace where we know they can get a job and they’ll be welcome.”

While claiming the current “chaos” has been “very beneficial for the Republicans,” Clinton referenced crime in NYC hurting Democrats in the 2022 election.

“But the Democrats lost enough seats in New York because of reaction to the crime problem here and the sense that — we didn’t have — we, my party — didn’t have a good commonsense approach to it,” he said of the migrant crisis.
