Boston shells out $116 million taxpayer dollars to house migrants in hotels, feed 3 meals a day — until June

Struggling American taxpayers are footing the $116 million bill in Massachusetts for illegal immigrants to live in luxury while Democrat leaders cry poor.

Documents show the massive cost of housing illegal immigrants in Boston and across the state while Massachusetts is reportedly struggling to maintain its shelter system.

“Records obtained by the I-Team show the state has 17 contracts for housing totaling more than $116 million. Those contracts are only for fiscal year 2024 and end in June,” CBS News reported.

Senator Peter Durant (R-Worcester) told CBS News, “This is something that we have been asking the administration for information on, for the better part of a year and have been stonewalled on the information. So I think for you to get it, I think it’s really important.”

The state is reportedly paying hotels as much as $63 a day per person for meals. That breaks down to $16 for breakfast, $17 for lunch, and $31 for dinner. All courtesy of taxpayers.

“Last August, Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey declared a state of emergency, saying the state had more than 20,000 migrants in its shelter system,” the Daily Mail noted.

“Capacity overruns have necessitated the use of hotels for emergency shelter, but earlier this month the state opened a new temporary facility with 400 beds in Boston’s Melnea Cass Recreational Center,” the outlet stated.

Massachusetts follows the lead of another Democrat-led illegal immigrant disaster in New York and has a longstanding Right to Shelter law that mandates the state provide shelter to those in need. That includes not only shelter but basic cooking capabilities as well, and if a facility doesn’t have them, the state is required to arrange for food delivery.

“Spinelli Ravioli Manufacturing Company in East Boston, a full-service drop-off catering company with 30 years’ experience in the industry was awarded a $10 million-dollar six-month no-bid contract to provide and deliver meals,” CBS News wrote.

“As an approved state vendor, Spinelli’s was contacted at the onset of the crisis. We are not the exclusive meal vendor and do not have a guaranteed contract, or financial agreement, beyond this initial emergency period. We are currently in the bid process for an enduring contract and are looking forward to continue to aid the State and the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities to reach their goals,” the vendor told CBS News.

The state’s Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities asserts that the no-bid contract is justified because of the tsunami of demand from illegal immigrants. Spinelli’s contract is up at the end of March.

Senator Durant claims that the contracts are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the overall cost of the crisis, “The MassHealth cost and the educational cost. That’s the concern is the money has to come from somewhere and so there’s only really two options. You either raise taxes or you cut services. So, this all of this kind of flows downhill right straight to the taxpayers.”

“In January, Gov. Maura Healey proposed an $873 million supplemental budget that would help pay for the current shelter shortfall. The rest of the money would be used for the projected cost of emergency assistance in 2025,” CBS News reported.

Massachusetts has requested that families open their homes to illegal immigrants to help with the overflow.

The state’s newest emergency shelter at the Cass Recreational Center in Roxbury has already reached its 400-person limit in just a week. To make room for the illegal immigrants, numerous groups were booted including the Boston United Track and Cross Country Club, which helps children from some of Boston’s poorest neighborhoods, according to the Daily Mail.
