Camera catches Ohio man fatally shoot daughter’s ex-boyfriend amid attempted break in

A Ring camera video captured the fatal moment a concerned father shot and killed his daughter’s ex-boyfriend who was trying to break through the front door of their home.

The shooting took place last month in Sydney, Ohio, when James Rayl, 22, showed up at the home, according to WHIO-TV. After being told to leave, the rejected former beau can be seen using his shoulder to try to barge through the locked door.

The father is on the other side of the door and can be heard telling Rayl that he has a gun, but that did not deter him. When Rayl finally succeeded in breaching the door, three shots ring out in under three seconds. The tragically sad ending being recorded by the doorbell camera.

The ex-boyfriend begins retreating after the first shot, which appeared to strike him. As he turns to leave, two more shots ring out and appear to strike him in the back. Rayl then exits the porch, clearly in distress. He makes it to the driveway, where he collapses out of sight of the camera except for his lower legs.

All the while, the daughter can be heard screaming inside.

WHIO obtained the 911 audio recording from the incident, and a woman believed to be the daughter can be heard asking, “Dad, is he trying to kill me?”

After shooting Rayl, his daughter is heard telling him, “Dad, there’s nothing you could have done. You saved my life.”

A Shelby County grand jury voted 8-1 against indicting the father, citing Ohio’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which states that a homeowner has no legal duty to retreat from their home before firing a gun.

Rayl’s sister Jessica Colbert reacted online to the verdict by blasting the father and daughter.

“Mitch shot him in the back and killed him,” Colbert posted. “I hope your days are more miserable than they’ve ever been. You’re a disgusting excuse of a human being along with your daughter.”
