Cash-strapped Democrats are pouring money into a couple of key 2025 races because they’re that confident they’ll win.
“I do expect that we’ll win those elections in New Jersey and Virginia,” Democrat National Committee (DNC) chair Ken Martin told Fox News. “We feel pretty bullish about our chances.”
New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states that are holding gubernatorial elections this year.
Fox News notes that both races are viewed by Democrats as “early tests of President Donald Trump’s agenda and as a barometer for next year’s midterm elections, when Democrats hope to win back control of Congress.”
The DNC has reportedly already spent over $7 million on not only the elections in New Jersey and Virginia but also Pennsylvania, where Fox News notes they’re “fighting to retain three state supreme court seats.”
“I’ve always taken the position that every election matters, whether it’s an on year off year, whether it’s a local election, a federal election, every inch of ground that we gain here adds up,” Martin said.
He was 100 percent right about that. They all matter.
Martin continued by arguing that Democrats have performed better than Republicans in the 45 elections that have occurred since Inauguration Day.
“Democrats have overperformed in all of them to the tune of about 16 percentage points on average,” he confidently mused.
And sadly, they’ve done so despite the party’s increasing radicalism. One recent example of this radicalism involved Martin himself telling Semafor that the Trump administration is “fascist.”

Asked what a loss would mean for his party, Martin basically refused to reply, doubling down on his insistence that victory is inevitable.
“I do expect that we’ll win those elections in New Jersey and Virginia. We have terrific candidates who are running great campaigns,” he said, adding that his focus is on “turning out every single vote we can over these next several days left to make sure we do win.”
However, he did recently admit to Politico that Republicans boast the highest chances of winning in New Jersey.
“New Jersey is the best place, probably, for Donald Trump to actually stop the Democratic momentum — or at least minimize the Democratic momentum that we’ve seen throughout this year,” he said.
Confronted by Fox News with these remarks, Martin finally admitted that “history is not on our side in the sense that we’ve never elected, at least in 50 years, a Democrat to a third term in the governorship” in New Jersey.
Martin was also confronted about the controversy in Virginia, where Democrat attorney general nominee Jay Jones has been found to have sent texts in 2022 wishing murder on a Republican and his children.
“Let me be very clear, I immediately condemned those vile and indefensible comments and text messages that he made and called on him to apologize,” Martin said. “He needed to apologize to Virginians, which he did.”
We are appalled by these vile and hateful text messages. Jay Jones must drop out of the AG race immediately.

But when asked whether Jones should step aside, he demurred.
“That’s not up to me to decide,” Martin maintained. “That’s up to Virginians to decide whether or not his comments were disqualifying, and they’ll make their decision in a few days.”
And regarding the state Supreme Court elections in Pennsylvania, he stressed that they’re “critical for our party, because what we’ve seen over many years now is attempts by billionaire donors and special interests to buy Supreme Court seats throughout the country, and it’s an attempt actually to thwart our democracy.”
“The reality is, is for us, this is a critical election for the National Democratic Party, because if they win here, if these billionaire donors are able to win these three Supreme Court races, they will certainly take this on the road and try to do this everywhere else in the country,” he added.
This report comes as its being shown the disparity between RNC and DNC coffers:
