A new day at CBS News with a goal to “tell the truth plainly” was met with more than mere hyperbole as one talking head suggested the need to “Pray for 60 Minutes.”
Monday, to much weeping and gnashing of teeth, CBS News’ parent company, Paramount, announced a deal had been struck with The Free Press CEO Bari Weiss and that she would be taking the role as the outlet’s editor-in-chief. In the wake of a letter distributed to employees outlining the “core journalistic values” that would be central at CBS News, former CNBC and Fox News contributor Julie Roginsky went to extremes with a flat-earth example.
The Democratic Party strategist, oft seen laughably put in check by Republican strategist Scott Jennings, took to X Monday morning to lament, “Pray for 60 Minutes. It is the most indispensable news entity we have, and it is about to be overseen by someone who thinks we need to give equal weight to people who argue that the earth is flat and to people who argue that the earth is round.”

As had been reported, Weiss’ appointment was followed by a letter to employees where she wrote, “What I can tell you on day one is that I stand for the same core journalistic values that have defined this profession since the beginning, and I will continue to champion them alongside you.”
In addition to calling for journalism that is “fair, fearless, and factual,” as well as that “reports on the world as it actually is,” the new editor-in-chief addressed the import for journalism to embrace “a wide spectrum of views and voices so that the audience can contend with the best arguments on all sides of a debate,” presenting “facts, first and foremost.”
Naturally, this left many employees at CBS News, which settled a lawsuit with President Donald Trump for $16 million after allegations of election interference due to the manner it edited then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s “60 Minutes” pre-election interview, bristling.
As The Guardian’s Jeremy Barr put it, “Several CBS News employees I have spoken with said they are in ‘wait-and-see’ mode. One was more blunt: ‘A throwing up emoji is not enough of a reflection of the feelings in here.'”

While the Harris interview was readily singled out as one of the most egregious examples to refute Roginsky’s notion that “60 Minutes” remained an “indispensable news entity,” it was far from the only one as others called to mind President Donald Trump’s 2020 interview with Lesley Stahl where she claimed there was “no real evidence” that his campaign had been spied on as well as Dan Rather’s 2004 report that challenged then President George W. Bush’s service record with documents deemed questionable at best.
Ultimately, Roginsky’s framing was turned against her as one social media response expressed, “Thank goodness the round earthers get a seat at the table now.”

Frankly, at this point if @CBSNews said the earth was round I’d have to at least consider it’s probably flat. ♂️

Yes, 60 Minutes of the “fake but accurate” school of journalism. pic.twitter.com/BFOiL4cyUd

I think not editing interviews to change context in order to prop up an incompetent candidate would be an improvement. pic.twitter.com/Z1ZJ5YXsg0

You should’ve prayed for 60 minutes a long time ago. When they lost their journalistic integrity.

You misspelled “unwatchable”.

So much stupid packed into one little tweet, quite the accomplishment.
