Just days before Friday’s 49th annual March for Life is set to take place in Washington DC,  a local restaurant has canceled a scheduled event that was meant to be held by Democrats for Life of America (DFLA), a group committed “to promoting sound policies that protect all human lives at all stages,” according to their website.

Busboys and Poets, a coffee house/restaurant/bar/bookstore masquerading as a “cultural hub” for “inspiring social change,”  pulled the plug on DFLA’s event after learning their would-be paying customers who held pro-life views, claiming that the establishment also views itself as a community of “safe space.”

Kristen Day, the executive director of DFLA, emailed supporters on January 11, apprising them of the cancellation and requesting donations to help them secure another location for their event.

Lest there be any confusion over Busboys and Poets’ reasons for cancelling DFLA over its pro-life position, the restaurant spelled it out for Katie Yoder of the Catholic News Agency.

“When our team learned the fundraising nature of the event in question, the decision was made to cancel it and refund all deposits to the event organizer,” a spokeswoman for Busboys and Poets told CNA, adding that the chain “stands firmly on the belief that women have the right to make their own reproductive health decisions.”

“While we welcome conversations from individuals expressing different viewpoints and pride ourselves on being a venue for respectful conversations between diverse groups, we are also a safe space,” the spokeswoman continued. “As such, we cannot knowingly accept events designed to fund an agenda which our community members believe to be trampling on the rights of others.”

In other words, while Busboys and Poets’ websites and presence on social media seem to suggest they encourage discourse on social change, they want you to know they will quickly toss all that out the nearest window if any “conversations between diverse groups” go against their own beliefs.

If you disagree with them, they will act swiftly and decisively to close their ears and kick you out, all in the name of feeling “safe.” Because, as Rebecca Downs and many disappointed patrons now know with certainty, nothing is more dangerous or disconcerting than a dissenting point of view.

While it remains to be seen where Busboys and Poets will ultimately fall on the Woke-Broke Scale, DFLA has already moved on to a friendlier location. Their supporters will now be enjoying their Friday breakfast at the far more hospitable and sensible  Harriett’s, whose owners are not afraid to let their customers think for themselves.
