Embattled Baltimore DA Marilyn Mosby loses Dem primary amid $1M COVID fraud scandal

Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby, known best for her woke stance on police reform, has lost her Democratic primary race to defense attorney Ivan Bates in the wake of an indictment for perjury related to alleged COVID fraud and $1 million purchase of two homes in Florida while crime in her city skyrocketed.

A two-term incumbent, Mosby was handed an indictment earlier this year on two counts of perjury and two counts of making a false statement on a loan application so that she could purchase a $913,000  house in Kissimmee, Fla., and a $732,000 condo in LongBoat Key, Fla. — lies equaling $1.02 million, according to the Daily Mail. She then claimed the Kissimmee property as a second residence so she could obtain a lower interest rate.

Mosby allegedly lied when she said the COVID-19 pandemic had harmed her finances — claims that allowed her to qualify for COVID-19 aid loans and withdraw from her city retirement account $90,000 to purchase the homes.

Her gross salary in 2020 topped $240,000, the indictment states, and the amount was never reduced.

Naturally, the woman who led the 2015 charge against six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man whose spine was injured when the officers allegedly handcuffed and shackled him and loaded him headfirst into a police van, has stated the charges were nothing more than a “racist witch hunt,” the result of a personal vendetta federal prosecutors carry for her.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and implied that, because she is “woke and black,” she is a political target.

In the case of Freddie Gray, the six Baltimore police officers pleaded not guilty to every charge and endured two trials. Mosby earned no convictions, but she did receive the national spotlight for her efforts, BizPac Review reported at the time.

Rioters took to the streets in protest, egged on by Mosby, who told the woke activists, “I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,” as the city she serves went up in flames and business fell victim to looting.

The Baltimore rioters were assured by Mosby that “this is your moment. Let’s ensure that we have peaceful and productive rallies that will develop structural and systemic changes for generations to come.”

“You’re at the forefront of this cause,” she stated. “And as young people, our time is now.”

And, while she was encouraging lawless thugs to feel free to express themselves, she imposed a gag order on the defense, all the while parading in front of cameras and conducting TV interviews.

Two of the six officers, both charged with involuntary manslaughter, sued her for defamation and invasion of privacy, BizPac Review reported.

Former Baltimore Police officer Peter Moskos noted back in 2020 that Mosby “heard the cry for justice” and had the officers arrested “to placate the protesters and rioters.”

The prosecutor “never showed crime happened,” Moskos told CNN at the time. “It was a tragedy but it was a civil issue.”

Ultimately, Mosby dropped the charges against the remaining officers.

Now, in the wake of her indictment, voters have apparently had enough, and on Saturday morning, Mosby conceded to her opponent.

“This morning I called Ivan Bates to congratulate him on his victory in the Democratic primary for Baltimore City State’s Attorney,” she tweeted. “My office is completely prepared to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition to the new administration.”

“I am grateful to my family and my colleagues in the State Attorney’s office for their commitment to our city and all their hard work on behalf of the citizens of Baltimore,” she continued. “We have so much  to be proud of and I am forever indebted to so many for their love, support, and partnership over these past eight years.”

“The opportunity to serve this city and the strong resilient people of Baltimore is the greatest blessing of my life,” Mosby said, “and I am forever appreciative.”

Editor’s Note: This post was updated to note Gray’s spinal cord injury, allegedly sustained during his arrest by police officers who were not charged with his death.
