Gavin Newsom throws cold water on $1.2M reparation checks; ‘like that episode of The Office’

A funny thing happened on the way to the racial lottery jackpot for black Californians who, according to a state reparations task force, are deserving of cash payment checks up to $1.2 million, a ridiculous idea that Governor Gavin Newsom himself has thrown cold water on.

For cash-strapped California facing a budget crisis, the proposed cash payments threaten to further add to the Democrat-controlled state’s financial woes, forcing Newsom to come out and say that while the panel’s work is admirable, reparations “is about much more than cash payments.”

“The Reparations Task Force’s independent findings and recommendations are a milestone in our bipartisan effort to advance justice and promote healing. This has been an important process, and we should continue to work as a nation to reconcile our original sin of slavery and understand how that history has shaped our country,” the governor said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Dealing with that legacy is about much more than cash payments,” Newsom said, words that aren’t likely to be taken well by black residents hopeful of a massive cash reward for having the right skin color in a twisted era of race worship.

“Many of the recommendations put forward by the Task Force are critical action items we’ve already been hard at work addressing: breaking down barriers to vote, bolstering resources to address hate, enacting sweeping law enforcement and justice reforms to build trust and safety, strengthening economic mobility — all while investing billions to root out disparities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare, and well beyond. This work must continue,” Newsom told the outlet.

The reparations task force made its formal recommendation that the state shell out the cash payments of up to $1.2 million at a public meeting in Oakland over the weekend, a gathering at which Democrat Rep. Barbara Lee, who represents the area, proclaimed that reparations are a “human right long overdue,” according to the Washington Examiner.

The obscene number wasn’t enough for some greedy attendees at the meeting, including a fire-breathing local preacher who roused the rabble as he waved around a paper and hollered that the panel’s number isn’t an accurate tally of the cost of 40 acres and a mule after inflation has been taken into account.

“You know that the numbers should be equivocal to what an acre was back then. We were given 40, OK? We were given 40 acres,” raged Reverend Tony Pierce. “You know what that number is. You keep trying to talk about now, yet you research back to slavery and you say nothing about slavery, nothing”

“So, the equivocal number from the 1860s for 40 acres to today is $200 million for each and every African-American,” he declared.

Fox News anchor Jesse Watters ridiculed the idea of the reparations payments, likening it to a promise made by a fictional character in a popular television series The Office.

“Following the Task Force’s submission of its final report this summer, I look forward to a continued partnership with the Legislature to advance systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians,” Newsom told Fox News Digital.
