GOP Rep. George Santos charged by DOJ, his arrest reportedly imminent

In what seemed to be inevitable when first elected to office, it appears that embattled U.S. Rep. George Santos’ days in Congress may be numbered.

Santos, R-N.Y., came into office under a cloud after it was disclosed that he appeared to have fabricated much of his resume, from his education to his employment history, and he has now been “criminally charged by the Justice Department,” according to the Washington Examiner.

“Prosecutors from the Justice Department and FBI in New York and Washington have been investigating allegations of false statements in Santos’s campaign finance filings and other areas,” the newspaper reported, adding that Santos’ “exact charges are currently unknown as they are under seal, but the representative is expected to appear in federal court in New York as early as Wednesday.”

The Examiner linked to a CBS News report to add that Santos could be arrested Wednesday.

Contacted by the Associated Press, Santos claimed to be unaware of any pending charges.

“This is news to me,” the lawmaker told the news agency“You’re the first to call me about this.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters during a news conference that he will look at the charges before making any decisions about Santos’ future in Congress.

“I’ll look at the charges,” the speaker said.

While it’s fair to argue that Santos brought DOJ scrutiny on himself, Attorney General Merrick Garland doesn’t seem to exhibit the same enthusiasm to go after Democrats who may be skirting campaign finance laws. Or to pursue the highly questionable actions of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.
