Hunter Biden’s prosecutor David Weiss under increasing scrutiny after controversial plea deal

Republicans are digging deep to find out exactly who is Hunter Biden’s prosecutor, US Attorney David Weiss, after he cut the first son a sweetheart deal that entailed only probation instead of time behind bars for numerous felonies.

The Justice Department is being accused of corruption over the ruling by Republicans who decrying a two-tier justice system. Weiss hotly denied claims on Monday by two IRS whistleblowers who alleged officials at the Justice Department, FBI, and IRS interfered with his five-year investigation into President Biden’s son. Attorney General Merrick Garland has also denied it.

Weiss has previously defended the probe into Hunter Biden’s financial dealings after announcing in June that the president’s son had agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax violations and enter into a diversion program for a felony gun charge, keeping him out of jail.

Weiss hails from Philadelphia. He started his legal career in 1984 as a law clerk to Justice Andrew D. Christie of the Delaware Supreme Court. Despite the fact that he’s a registered Republican, it does not appear that he’s made any kind of meaningful donations to the party, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Weiss previously served as an assistant US attorney starting in 1986 and ending in 1989. He prosecuted corruption, money laundering, and mail and wire fraud. Then he spent the next ten years in the private sector at Duane Morris and The Siegfried Group, before he returned to serve as the first assistant US attorney.

Former President Trump nominated him as US attorney in November 2017 following the recommendation of Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons, who are both Delaware Democrats.

“David is a career prosecutor and dedicated public servant, longtime Delawarean, and valued member of our law enforcement community,” Coons noted at the time, selling Weiss hard to Trump. “I want to thank the White House for working with Sen. Carper and me to present an excellent nominee for US attorney.”

Weiss would go on to be confirmed by the Senate and sworn in as the attorney for the US District Court for the District of Delaware on February 22, 2018.

According to Fox News, “In February 2021, shortly after President Biden took office, the DOJ pressured Trump-appointed U.S. attorneys to resign, but Weiss was asked to stay on due to the Hunter Biden probe, which began sometime in 2018.”

“Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent letters to Weiss and Garland in June, demanding answers amid allegations from the whistleblowers suggesting the probe was slow-walked and influenced by politics,” the media outlet continued.

In testimony given before the House Ways and Means Committee, whistleblowers contended that Weiss was “constantly hamstrung, limited, and marginalized by DOJ officials as well as other US Attorneys.” They testified that Weiss had requested to have special counsel authority, but was denied his request.

“It is imperative these allegations are addressed head-on,” Graham wrote in a letter to Garland, asking him if he was “aware of any request” by Weiss to be designated special counsel.

Weiss responded in a letter on Monday claiming that he had not requested special counsel designation, according to The Washington Post. He claimed once again that he has “never been denied the authority to bring charges in any jurisdiction.”

The Justice Department is also denying the whistleblowers’ claims. Garland asserts that Weiss was “given complete authority to make all decisions on his own behalf.”
