Imam who addressed Congress under fire for comments about Graham’s death

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, will introduce a resolution to censure Texas Imam Omar Suleiman.

Suleiman was previously invited to the House of Representatives by Democrats in 2019 to deliver the opening prayer, but now Van Duyne, who represents the district where he lives, is moving to formally condemn him. The resolution comes after Suleiman reportedly celebrated the death of Senator Lindsey Graham in a social media post.

“In other news, Lindsey Graham is dead. Bye Lindsey. May you live an eternity in ruins for the ruins you helped create in Gaza. Ameen,” the post, made early Sunday morning, reads.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, the lawmaker expressed her disgust with the callous comment.

“This type of action from a religious leader that claims to preach about love and not hate needs to be condemned. That was anything but love. That was depravity,” she said. “Is this really what you believe—that you’re going to take a sitting senator who has just died, and you’re going to condemn his soul to an eternity of ruins because you don’t agree with his politics?”

“It needs to be condemned by those Democrats who called him to the House floor to preach,” she added. “I would love to be able to get Democrats who are on the floor who don’t agree that this is the type of action that a religious leader should take.”

This isn’t exactly Suleiman’s first brush with controversy.

“He previously called for a third Intifada — widely interpreted as a call for violence against Israel and the Jewish people — and labeled Zionists ‘enemies of God,’ according to the Jerusalem Post,” Fox News noted on X.
