An Italian runner at the front of the pack in a 400-meter race would end up finishing last due to what had to be the ultimate wardrobe malfunction.
Alberto Nonino, 18, was competing at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia and was doing quite well until his penis decided it needed a little air — which is not to suggest that he tripped over the appendage (some will argue that it’s an organ).
“Alberto Nonino started off extremely well by gaining pace against his competitors, leaving the bystanders under the impression that he might win the race with quite ease. However, after Nonino passed the middle lane, he looked uncomfortable and kept reaching down to hold his crotch a couple of times,” reported News 18, an Indian English-language news television channel. “At the time, viewers did not know what went wrong, but Nonino’s pace decreased a tad bit, allowing his competitors to overtake him. The athlete, unfortunately, finished last with a time record of 51.57 seconds.”
Citing sports journalist David Sanchez de Castro, News 18 said Nonino’s penis kept falling out of his shorts and that “did not allow him to run properly during the race.
Video shared online shows the young athlete trying to fidget with his shorts while running, all the while his pace slowly went limp as he did:

Nonino didn’t shy away from the embarrassing moment, saying in an Instagram post that he felt “terrible” about the incident but is trying to laugh it off.
“I just want to talk to you a little bit about the rumpus there’s been on blogs and social media in general. I’m conscious it was obviously an accident and I’d like to tell you I’m aware of the reaction and you don’t need to send me the links to the blogs out there,” he said in an Instagram story.
“I’m trying to laugh about it now but immediately afterward I felt terrible and I’m thankful to my friends and family for helping me get over what happened a few hours later,” Nonino continued, before noting more seriously that all the attention could have been devastating for a more sensitive person.
