Jessica Tarlov’s midterm victory predictions more like ‘gotchas that never land’

An attempt by Jessica Tarlov to dunk on President Donald Trump appeared more like “wishful thinking dressed up as optimism” as she looked ahead to the midterms.

The critical 2026 midterm elections may seem far off on a traditional calendar, being just under seven months away, but the congressional calendar shows only about 12 weeks remaining where both chambers are in session. So, as every story shapes up to be a tug of war to move the needle at the polls, Tarlov aimed to spin the president’s appearances and recent comments on the price of oil as pointing toward “a good midterms for Democrats.”

Taking to X, the co-host of Fox News’ “The Five” shared a clip of the chief executive from a recent interview, a night after attending a fight in Miami, where he suggested prices at the pump may only change for the worse before November. “Between UFC during nuclear negotiations and a [I don’t give a f*ck] attitude in prices, shaping up to be a good midterms for Democrats.”

As had been reported, “Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo had asked the president, “Do you believe the price of oil and gas will be lower before the midterm elections?”

To that, Trump responded, “I hope so. I mean, I think so, it could be. It could be the same, or maybe a little bit higher, but it should be around the same.”

He went on to say of the conflict with Iran, “I think this won’t be that much longer. They’re wiped out. They’re wiped out, and you don’t get a fair shake. You don’t get, you know — we need a free and fair press in this country, and I don’t even know why people would do that, why would they say how wonderful they’re doing militarily, they’re doing so well. They’re totally — the country is wiped out.”

Despite the doomsaying from Tarlov, recent actions from the administration have seen downward trends for the price of oil. Following the announcement of a ceasefire, a sharp fall occurred before some minor upticks amid violations of the agreement. After the president announced the commencement of a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the price of some oil dropped as much as 2.5% by the end of the day.

Near the end of March, Trump offered his opinion of Tarlov when he told “The Five” co-host Jesse Watters, “I watch Jessica, and I’m not a fan. And she uses fake numbers. She’ll give, ‘Well, he’s only polling 42%.’ That’s not right … I hate people that use fake polls because polls are just like bad journalists. You know, bad journalists, they write fake stories. Well, fake polls do damage also, but that’s the thing. I’m sure she’s a lovely person.”

That assertion was outright complimentary compared to some of the reactions on X, as one user wrote among many slams, “Jessica. All you think about is your gotchas that never land. WE Don’t CARE. Stand for something or fall for anything. If your perceived Trump failures make Democrats strong, then what sort of crazy is that?”
