‘Just the sweetest couple’: 17-yr-old home intruder kills elderly couple, then shoots it out with police

A 17-year-old Mississippi male has been hit with 13 charges after he allegedly murdered an elderly couple on Wednesday, June 3.

Cordarius Laray Hobbs, 17, broke into the home of Billy Blair, 74, and Virginia Carol Blair, 71, before allegedly killing them.

Hobbs later got into a standoff with local deputies, during which time he “fired shots at four different law enforcement officers and an infant at the scene,” according to local station WLBT.

He’s since been hit with 13 charges, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault against a law officer, and two counts of aggravated assault against someone over 65 years of age.

Pastor Andy Fullington of New Hebron Baptist Church in Lawrence County, who, according to WLBT, had reportedly pastored the Blairs, described them as people who loved the Christian Lord Jesus Christ.

“You didn’t have to wonder about Ms. Carol or Mr. Billy,” the pastor told the station. “You knew they loved the Lord. You knew that they were just good people that would help anyone.”

Carol, the wife, used to play piano at his church. She last played a song, “Where He Leads, I Will Follow,” during a church meetup on Sunday.

“That was their life story,” Fullington said. “They walked with the Lord. They have left behind a beautiful example, a shining light, and we’re going to miss them so much, but we know where they are, and that gives us great comfort.”

Both of the Blairs were beloved at the church.

“They were just the sweetest couple,” Fullington noted. “They were always wanting to help others out. I’ve had a number of people come to me and say, ‘When I came to the church, they were the ones that greeted us; they were the ones who welcomed us to the church family.’ I think that’s something that’s very special. They were both such faithful and loving people.”

The pastor also revealed that the Blairs would often approach him after his sermon to offer words of encouragement.

“Ms. Carol would always come up to me after our sermon, after I would preach the sermon, and she would always say, ‘You did a great job,'” he recalled. “Even if it was a bad sermon, even messed up, she was just a godly woman who had such encouragement and she would always share some encouraging words.”

With the two gone, there will now be a noticeable void.

“The neat thing about Mr. Billy and Ms. Carol, where you saw one, you saw the other; they were always together,” Fullington said. “Even when they had the tire business in Magee, they worked together and right alongside each other. They were just the sweetest couple and had such a beautiful spirit about them. They loved the Lord and it was evident in their life.”

As for Hobbs, he appears to come from a criminal family. His brothers, Cortavious and Cortavion Hobbs, opened fire on Covington County Deputy Yates Rodney during a traffic stop that occurred on Monday, June 8.

Though Rodney stopped them for a simple seatbelt violation, he reportedly observed narcotics and contraband inside their vehicle. But before he could say anything, they made a run for it.

The brothers led the deputy on a chase that ended when they became stuck, at which point Rodney caught up to them, exited his vehicle, and ordered them to get out of their car.

“At that time, authorities said the driver continued attempting to free the vehicle from the bogged area, while the passenger exited and laid on the ground with his hands raised,” according to station WJTV.

“They said Deputy Austin Riels arrived on scene shortly to assist Rodney. As Rodney approached the SUV, investigators said the passenger suddenly got up from the ground and opened fire on the deputies,” the station reported.

Rodney sustained a wound underneath his shoulder and arm. Deputy Riels, meanwhile, opened fire, but the brothers managed to evade his shots and flee from the scene. They were arrested a day later after an extensive manhunt.
