Years after an unprecedented raid on his home, President Donald Trump announced the central focus of that bit of lawfare was returning to Mar-a-Lago.
On Aug. 8, 2022, the FBI all but assured Trump would once again win the Republican presidential nomination when agents descended upon his residence in Palm Beach, Florida. Friday, the boxes that were central to former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s since-dissolved documents case made their way back to Mar-a-Lago as “Justice finally won out.”
Taking to Truth Social, having departed Washington, D.C. en route to the Sunshine State, the president detailed, “The Department of Justice has just returned the boxes that Deranged Jack Smith made such a big deal about. They are being brought down to Florida and will someday be part of the Trump Presidential Library.”
“Justice finally won out,” he continued. “I did absolutely nothing wrong. This was merely an attack on a political opponent that, obviously, did not work well. Justice in our Country will now be restored.”

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity, Trump’s victory at the ballot box on Election Night against now-former Vice President Kamala Harris and the determination that Smith’s appointment as special counsel had been unconstitutional, allegations of mishandling classified documents and election interference were dropped in their respective cases, though Smith maintained he would have secured a conviction.
In addition to the president’s post, White House communications director Steven Cheung said, “The FBI is giving the President his property back that was taken during the unlawful and illegal raids. We are taking possession of the boxes today and loading them onto Air Force One.”
White House counselor Alina Habba took to X Friday to assert, “I just personally loaded the infamous ‘boxes’ back onto Air Force 1 to head home where they belong. Justice has been and will continue to be restored in this country under President Trump. TRUTH AND JUSTICE ALWAYS WIN IN THE END. God Bless America.”

Recently, Trump had included employees from the law firm Covington & Burling LLP on his growing list of individuals stripped of security clearances.
The action singled out the firm over ties to Smith’s lawfare against Trump and the memo explained, “All contracts with Covington & Burling LLP will undergo a detailed evaluation to ensure agency funding decisions align with American citizens’ interests and the priorities of this Administration, as detailed in executive directives.”
Though the memo didn’t specify names, it was expected that the revocation would impact Lanny Breuer, who’d previously served the Department of Justice’s criminal division during the Obama administration, and Peter Koski, once deputy chief of the DOJ’s public integrity section.
Reactions to the return of the boxes after the 2022 raid, which included details of agents going through the personal affects of Melania and Barron Trump, were supportive of the “flex” from the president.
Trump’s team hauling those Mar-a-Lago boxes back onto Air Force One is a hell of a flex—FBI grabbed ‘em in ‘22, and now they’re headed home. Shows the guy’s not letting that raid define him; he’s taking back what’s his. Big move, no question.
