Stevie Nicks has had a plethora of hits during her storied musical career but the classic rock and roll songstress said that her new pro-abortion anthem may be the “most important” thing she’s done yet.
The 76-year-old Fleetwood Mac singer released her first solo single in four years this week, touting “The Lighthouse” which was inspired by the Supreme Court’s sending the contentious issue of abortion back to the states with the 2020 decision overturning Roe v. Wade as a potential difference maker for women.
“I find it very sad, at 76 years old, I had to see Roe v. Wade taken away,” Nicks said in an interview with People. “Two years ago, when I realized the consequences of women’s rights that are vanishing, I watched a lot of news, and I was like a sponge — it just went into me.”

I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying “what can we, as a collective force, do about this…” For me, it was to write a song.

“One morning I woke up… which, I never write when I wake up in the morning, and all of a sudden went, ‘I have my scars, I have my scars,’ so I just grabbed my notebook, and I started writing the whole thing,” she told the entertainment news outlet.
“It was a long-form poem, and I didn’t know what kind of song that would be. I found an instrumental that I loved and within two or three days, I had recorded the song. I never redid the vocal — it’s an original vocal — and it’s taken me two years,” she said of the song, which came out on Friday.
“I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘what can we, as a collective force, do about this…’ For me, it was to write a song,” Nicks wrote in a Friday post to X promoting her new single. “It took a while because I was on the road. Then early one morning I was watching the news on TV and a certain newscaster said something that felt like she was talking to me~ explaining what the loss of Roe v. Wade would come to mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.”
“That was September 6, 2022. I have been working on it ever since. I have often said to myself, ‘This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men that love them. This is an anthem,’ she added.
Back in her heyday, Nicks was a rock goddess along the lines of Taylor Swift, and she joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ most high-profile fan in throwing her backing behind Democrat nominee Kamala Harris, the “joyful warrior” who is on a crusade to institutionalize the “right” of an expectant mother to extinguish the life of her unborn child into federal law.
She endorsed Harris right after Swift did, with the “childless dog lady” making the big announcement in a September 11 post to X.

“As my friend @taylorswift13 so eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs. Only 54 days left until the election. Make sure you are registered to vote! Your vote in this election may be one of the most important things you ever do,” she wrote, signing her message, “Love, Stevie Nicks Childless Dog Lady.”
Nicks is scheduled to perform at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pa. on Sept. 28 and will share the billing with fellow geriatric rock icon Billy Joel at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. on March 29, 2025.
