Latest update on Maine shooter as Canada issues border alert, cops find note in home

An “armed and dangerous” alert has been issued by the Canada Border Services Agency to its Canada-U.S. border officers surrounding the search for suspected Lewiston, Maine, mass shooter Robert Card, as new details emerge about the fugitive who is believed to have killed 18 people and left 13 wounded.

On Thursday night, Maine State Police reported on Facebook, “Law enforcement officials are currently on Meadow Road in the town of Bowdoin to execute several search warrants.”

“The announcements that are being heard over a loud speaker are standard search warrant announcements when executing a warrant to ensure the safety of all involved,” the statement continued. “It is unknown whether Robert Card is in any of the homes law enforcement will search. Law enforcement officials are simply doing their due diligence by tracking down every lead in an effort to locate and apprehend Card.”

The search later wound down, with Card still in the wind, ABC News reported.

Meanwhile, a search of Card’s home revealed what the outlet says is an apparent suicide note addressed to Card’s son. “Law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation” said the note does not include a motive for the deadly shootings.

ABC News also reported that Card “appears to have been fairly thoughtful about eluding police. He left behind a cellphone that authorities have recovered apparently suspecting it could be tracked.”

The suspect’s online history showed Card apparently “interacted with conspiratorial content.”

“Topics he engaged with included, but were not limited to, concerns about a financial crisis/stock market, LGBTQ+ issues, gun rights and commentary about Democratic public officials, including President Joe Biden,” according to ABC News. It is unclear whether those interests played a role in his murderous deeds.

Former Florida police sergeant and SWAT team member, Marko Galbreath, noted that Card could be anywhere by now and urged the country to remain vigilant.

“He could still be in that area, planning to have a shootout with police, planning to commit suicide, planning to commit another attack,” Galbreath told DailyMail.com, which reported on the Canada border alert. “Or, you know what, he could be in Texas right now. We have no idea.”

“If he planned it out well enough, he could very well be far from that area right now,” he said. “We need to tell the entire country that until this guy is captured, we need to use due diligence.”

Galbreath cautioned that Card may have changed his appearance.

“He could have shaved, he could have put on a wig, he may change his appearance,” he explained. “He may not look like what people think he looks like, so we need to really watch.”

The intense search for Card has also been conducted on the water.

“It’s feared he may have fled on a boat he owns,” DailyMail.com reports. “Ryan Koroknay, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, said a response boat crew has been dispatched from Boothbay Harbor, and a fixed wing plane from Cape Cod is also assisting with search efforts.”

Rumors circulating online claiming that Card served as a firearms instructor in the military are false, according to a statement from the U.S. Army.

“Card was a reservist and assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment in Saco, Maine which had a training at West Point over the summer, according to Army spokesperson Bryce Dubee,” ABC News reports.

“While his unit supported West Point summer training in July of 2023, there are no records to indicate he instructed or participated in any training,” Dubee said in a statement. “The Army did not train SFC Card as a firearms instructor, nor did he serve in that capacity for the Army.”

According to DailyMail.com, “Card is believed to have joined the military reserve in 2002. A bulletin sent to police across the country after the attack said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this past summer after ‘hearing voices and threats to shoot up’ a military base.”
