Liz Cheney and President Zelenskyy both tapped to receive John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award

The political class continues to prop up and even reward U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., for her energetic opposition to former President Donald Trump.

Cheney, who is sometimes referred to as a “Pelosi Republican” after being hand-picked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to serve on the politically motivated Select Committee investigating the January 6 protest, was tapped to be one of five recipients of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award this year, with the JFK Library Foundation characterizing her as “one of the most conservative members within the Republican Conference” who has been “a consistent and courageous voice in defense of democracy.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also named as a recipient, along with three others who are being recognized for defending democracy by effectively upholding the 2020 presidential election results in critical battleground states, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, Arizona Republican House Speaker Rusty Bowers , and Georgia Election Department employee Wandrea “Shaye” Moss.

“In America, we have also seen how fragile our democratic institutions can be, and we have learned that they do not defend themselves,” Cheney said in a statement.

“We – each one of us – must do that.  If we do not stand for truth, the rule of law and our Constitution, if we set aside our founding principles for the politics of the moment, the miracle of our constitutional republic will slip away.”

Cheney was removed from the House GOP leadership last year and the Republican National Committee censured Cheney and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., earlier this year for participating in Pelosi’s select committee, saying they were more focused on destroying former President Donald Trump than supporting the GOP ahead of the 2022 election.

Facing a primary challenger this year, Cheney has hauled in over $7 million, far surpassing the amount she raised for the 2020 election, but the vast majority of that money is coming outside of her district. A whopping 96 percent, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Open Secrets.

As might be expected, Democrats celebrated Cheney’s inclusion among this year’s John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award recipients.
