Local Dem candidate goes missing, clothes found on beach

A Democrat candidate running for a seat on the Nassau County Legislature has disappeared, leaving behind only his car and clothes.

Candidate Petros Krommidas, 29, was last heard from last Wednesday, according to a Facebook post published by his family.

“On Wednesday, April 23, Petey parked his car by the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach, New York,” the post reads. “He locked his car, took a towel, and around 10:30 PM walked onto the beach to exercise, just as he had done many times before.”

“He has always been in great shape and has many future plans, including patticipating [SIC] in a triathlon. He was not a stranger to cold water training. His family reported him missing the next day, as it is completely out of character for him not to respond,” the post continues.

A day after his disappearance, the police found Krommidas’ car parked near the Long Beach boardwalk, according to Newsday.

“He’s a very loving boy,” family neighbor Carmen Frias, who’s known him since he was a child, told Newsday. “He’s very respectful, very nice.”

Krommidas is challenging incumbent Nassau County Legislator Patrick Mullaney, a Republican, for a seat on the Legislature.

On LinkedIn, he describes himself as a field organizer and clerk for the Democratic Party of Nassau County.

The party also posted on social media in an attempt to draw more attention to his disappearance:

“We are heartbroken over the disappearance of Petros Krommidas,” Nassau County Democratic Party chair Jay Jacobs said in a statement to local media. “Petros is a bright, driven young man who has been a strong voice for Democratic values.”

“He is well respected by the community and represents the very best of our next generation of leaders. We are keeping Petros and his family in our prayers and remain hopeful for his safe return,” Jacobs added.

The last time Krommidas wrote anything on social media was around 11:07 a.m. in the morning on the Tuesday before his disappearance.

“I had the opportunity to speak at last night’s Nassau County Young Democrats monthly meeting alongside Joe Scianablo, who’s running for Town of Hempstead Supervisor,” the post reads. “Thank you to the Nassau County Young Democrats for having me — always great to be with such a thoughtful, engaged group committed to making a difference in our community.”

Krommidas is a Columbia University graduate who’s described as being 6-foot-2, weighing 230 pounds, and having brown eyes and brown hair.

“He was last seen wearing a camouflage print sweatshirt and gray sweatpants,” according to Newsday.

Days before his disappearance, he reportedly took part in protests against President Donald Trump.

The last time a politician went missing was just last year, when longtime then-Texas Rep. Kay Granger missed six months of votes, only to eventually be discovered living at a retirement community with a severe case of dementia.

“We then received a tip from a Granger constituent who shared that the Congresswoman has been residing at a local memory care and assisted living home for some time after having been found wandering, lost, and confused in her former Cultural District/West 7th neighborhood,” The Dallas Express, which broke the story, reported in December.

“The Dallas Express team visited the facility to confirm whether Granger was residing there and to inquire about how she planned to vote on the spending bill. Upon arrival, two employees confirmed that Granger was indeed living at the facility,” the reporting continued.
