Democrats and their media flunkies are still gloating about the Supreme Court’s recent smackdown of President Donald J. Trump’s tariffs, with one left-leaning magazine having portrayed him as being bent over the knee of Chief Justice John Roberts.
Last month, the nation’s highest court ruled 6-3 that the sweeping tariffs that Trump imposed under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) exceeded his authority, a stinging blow to the president’s economic agenda.
Roberts, a George W. Bush appointee, was among the majority, which also included two of Trump’s own picks, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, whom the president angrily slammed after the ruling.
On the cover of its March 6 edition, The Week featured a bawling Trump getting his fanny paddled by the chief justice, along with the title: “A Supreme spanking” for its story on why the Roberts court ruled to nix the tariffs.

“The president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope,” Roberts wrote for the majority in the ruling, which came down on Feb. 20. “In light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he must identify clear congressional authorization to exercise it.”
According to the court, the emergency authority used by Trump “falls short,” and while it declined to invalidate all of the tariffs, it put the federal government on the hook to cough up refunds to the tune of $175 billion.
Trump was understandably upset over being kicked in the gut by his own appointees.
“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” he told reporters after the disappointing ruling was announced.

“The supreme court (will be using lower case letters for a while based on a complete lack of respect!) of the United States accidentally and unwittingly gave me, as President of the United States, far more powers and strength than I had prior to their ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive ruling,” Trump fumed on Truth Social.
Trump and Roberts haven’t seen eye-to-eye with the president previously slamming the chief justice for failing to rein in rogue activist lower court judges who have bogged down his governing agenda with temporary restraining orders and national injunctions.
“Unlawful Nationwide Injunctions by Radical Left Judges could very well lead to the destruction of our Country! These people are Lunatics, who do not care, even a little bit, about the repercussions from their very dangerous and incorrect Decisions and Rulings. Lawyers endlessly search the United States for these Judges, and file lawsuits as quickly as they find them.” Trump raged in a March 2025 Truth Social post in which he called for Roberts to put his foot down.
“If Justice Roberts and the United States Supreme Court do not fix this toxic and unprecedented situation IMMEDIATELY, our Country is in very serious trouble!” Trump added.
Thanks to the chief justice’s inaction, it’s now a year later, and the injunctions keep coming.
Roberts has publicly rebuked Trump over his call for the impeachment of Obama-appointed activist lower court judges.
“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose,” Roberts said in a statement last March after the president demanded the impeachment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.
In July 2024, Trump praised Roberts and the SCOTUS for giving Biden regime lawfare thug Jack Smith “a high level SPANKING” after a ruling upholding presidential immunity that derailed the Merrick Garland-led DOJ’s bogus prosecutions against him.
