Missouri AG launches probe into Liberty Safe amid backlash: ‘I am using every tool at my disposal’

Gun safe maker Liberty Safe has had an investigation launched against them by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey (R) over providing a backdoor to the FBI, who accessed a Jan. 6 protester’s safe.

Liberty Safe has been excoriated by Second Amendment advocates and gun owners over the constitutional violation.

Bailey announced on Tuesday that his office would formally launch an investigation into the company releasing the customer’s safe code to the feds, asserting that the FBI “did not have a court order ordering Liberty Safe to provide the safe’s combination.”

“I am using every tool at my disposal to protect the rights of all Missourians,” he proclaimed, according to Newsweek. “That’s why my office is opening this investigation to ensure Liberty Safe is not deceiving its customers in its terms of service.”

At first, Liberty Safe claimed they surrendered the access code for alleged Jan. 6 rioter Nathan Earl Hughes’ safe in response to a warrant. After massive backlash, they changed their policies to require a subpoena. That is not going to save the company which is now owned by alleged leftists who generously donate to Democrats in Missouri and nationally.

They initially claimed that “company protocol is to provide access codes to law enforcement if a warrant grants them access to property.”

Hughes was arrested on August 30 and charged with felony and misdemeanor charges connected to the protest at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

After it surfaced that the safe company had voluntarily worked with the feds, they were pulverized for it. A loud call for a boycott ensued.

“Liberty Safe is an enemy to gun owners,” Charlie Kirk, who is the founder of Turning Point USA, wrote on X. “They could have fought the warrant […] instead they buckled and bent over. Your guns are not safe with @libertysafeinc. Boycott. Ridicule. Ruin their company.”

The Missouri attorney general is accusing Liberty Safe of being dishonest and not being transparent with its customers concerning the sharing of safe codes with third parties.

“In an era where the federal government weaponizes our national security apparatus against political opponents, the last thing we need is for a private company to sell out its fellow Americans under pressure from federal bureaucrats,” Bailey stated when he announced the investigation, according to Newsweek.

Liberty Safe clapped back once again claiming that they had changed their policies.

The company’s protestations will not repair their brand which is probably damaged beyond all hope at this point. Gun owners will likely never trust them again.
