MSNBC analyst’s ‘dark’ midterm strategy: Use ‘fear of Trump’ to ‘scare the crap out of’ Democrat base

A far-left MSNBC commentator confirmed on Tuesday that all the Democrat Party has to run ongoing into the midterms is the irrational “fear of Trump.”

In describing this anti-Trump strategy to far-left network host Nicole Wallace, commentator John Heilemann stressed that this isn’t his plan but rather a plan that he’s heard Democrats bandying about as a likely midterm strategy.

“We’re going to have these 1/6 committee hearings. Donald Trump’s going to be in the spotlight. He wasn’t on the ballot in 2018 when we had massive turnout that helped Democrats — that blue wave — [but we won anyway] because we nationalized the elections and made it about fear of Trump,” he said.

“Let’s take Donald Trump, take that [Jan. 6] committee, the threat he poses to democracy, make him still the face of the Republican Party … talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Madison Cawthorn. Say this party is crazy town, it’s Trumpist, Trump is a threat to our democracy.”

In other words, the plan is for the Democrat Party to repeat the same screeds it’s been using — to no avail, judging by polling numbers — for the past six years.

Try to make Democrat base voters scared again. They can’t motivate them on the basis of hope or their pocketbooks or any of these accomplishments. They have to scare the crap out of them and get them to come out,” Heilemann continued.

“And then maybe — and this is a dark thought — the other thing that people look at as a variable is the possible repeal of Roe v. Wade, and that being a motivating factor for a lot of Democrat voters, and that those things are on the horizon.”

He concluded by stating that “a lot of Democrats” are pondering using this strategy.

Failed Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, tried using this exact strategy against current Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin in last year’s gubernatorial race. He nevertheless lost.

In fairness to Democrats, the strategy did clearly work in both the 2018 and 2020 elections. However, former President Donald Trump was in office at the time.

With Trump out of office, the focus of the wider public — not including zealous members of the Democrat base — appears to rest more on current President Joe Biden and his failures to quell the economic devastation chipping away at their pocketbooks.

And indeed, Heilemann suggested Democrats can’t run on padding Americans’ “pocketbooks” or on any other substantive “accomplishments” essentially because they’ve managed to exacerbate every single problem facing the nation.

Yet to hear Democrats tell it, the blame for all of the dilemmas faced by everyday Americans lies solely with Republicans — and of course Trump, the man who’s currently nowhere close to the levers of power.

The far-left commentator’s remarks came a day after Politico published its own confirmation, writing that, “As they face a serious enthusiasm gap going into the midterms, some Democrats are quietly reveling in how salacious reports about Trump and his allies — not to mention this week’s sex-and-drugs scandal in the House GOP — could help awaken their base.”

But, the left-wing outlet warned, it’s not clear “whether anti-Trump energy can give Democrats sustained momentum — it’s a nebulous prospect for a party that’s seen its biggest priorities stalled while the costs of everything from gas and groceries continue to shoot up.”

Exactly, say critics:

“They have nothing else to run on except for ‘evilll Trump’, they’ve tanked the economy, opened the southern border and flushed energy independence down the toilet: Will Democrats Make It About Trump – Again?” another tweet reads.
