Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly clashed during what is being described as a “heated” private call over House Republican strategy while the Democrats’ shutdown of the federal government drags on.
Despite the looming suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments which would impact their own voters and a call from the nation’s largest federal worker’s union to reopen the government, Democrats haven’t budged a single inch, and on Tuesday, they voted against a GOP funding resolution for the 13th time with the shutdown now having dragged on for a full month.
On the night of the 13th vote… the nightmare continued.

In the GOP-controlled House, tensions are running high between the outspoken Georgia congresswoman and leadership, with Greene expressing her opinion that the Republican majority is “being wasted” with lawmakers away from Washington, D.C., and not working to pass legislation after being instructed to stay in their home districts by Johnson, who has been holding weekly calls to keep them informed.
Details of the call were first reported by Fox News, with Greene telling Republican leaders that they should be working to find an “off ramp” for the Obamacare subsidies put in place during the COVID era, which are set to expire at year’s end.
“You guys need to get out of Washington, D.C., and go back to your districts and talk to real people, because real people are pissed,” Greene told the GOP leaders. “They expect us to do our legislative constitutional duty and not take marching orders from the political team at the White House.”
The staunch ally of President Donald J. Trump suggested that he is also being hurt by the ongoing shutdown.
“Even the president is losing support,” Fox News Digital was told, but according to the outlet, “Johnson defended Republicans’ legislative record so far as well as Trump’s popularity among the GOP base,” stating that he and other GOP leaders “had been working tirelessly to end the shutdown.”
“He’s not sleeping. I’m not sleeping … because we are working around the clock,” Johnson explained.
The top House Republican also criticized Greene’s criticism of the GOP’s strategy and direction on social media, asking the fiery Georgian, “How does that help us, Marjorie?”
Fox News Digital was also told that “several other” Republican House lawmakers who spoke defended Johnson’s leadership during the shutdown.
In addition to Greene, two other members of the GOP House caucus also disagreed with the speaker over keeping lawmakers away from the nation’s capital. Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) and Kevin Kiley (R-CA) expressed their concern over the extended break, which has gone on since September 19, after the short-term funding bill was passed. The bill gave lawmakers until November 21 to strike a deal on funding the government.
Rep. Greene confirmed the disagreement in a Tuesday post to X:
You left out that I said I have no respect for the House not being in session passing our bills and the President’s executive orders.
And I demanded to know from Speaker Johnson what the Republican plan for healthcare is to build the off-ramp off Obamacare and the ACA tax… https://t.co/eiY6M8tJyD

“You left out that I said I have no respect for the House not being in session passing our bills and the President’s executive orders,” she said in response to Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman, who reported on her remarks during the call. “And I demanded to know from Speaker Johnson what the Republican plan for healthcare is to build the off-ramp off Obamacare and the ACA tax credits to make health insurance affordable for Americans.”
“Johnson said he’s got ideas and pages of policy ideas and committees of jurisdiction are working on it, but he refused to give one policy proposal to our GOP conference on our own conference call,” MTG added. “Apparently, I have to go into a SCIF to find out the Republican healthcare plan!!!”
