New poll shows stunning new 2028 frontrunner for Dems

While most Democrats are obsessed with figuring out how to navigate the Schumer shutdown without negatively impacting their approval ratings, some are looking to the future.

After having their party’s message roundly rejected at the ballot box in 2024, the left has had a difficult time finding a political identity that will resonate with the average American voter. The last decade of race and gender politics hasn’t made them any friends in the states that decide elections, and it’s not entirely clear how they intend to move forward almost a year later. No obvious leader has stepped forward to take control of the party’s direction, and more importantly, they don’t seem to have learned anything from their defeat, as they continue to base their party’s message on little more than opposing President Donald Trump. This will not be a winning message in 2028 once Trump is on his way out, so who could Democrats look to for presidential leadership?

Apparently, the answer to that question is former Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

According to a new University of New Hampshire poll, Buttigieg is currently leading the pack at 19%. In second place is California Governor Gavin Newsom with 15%.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (14%)

Kamala Harris (11%)

Bernie Sanders (8%)

J.B. Pritzker (6%)

Andy Beshear, Amy Klobuchar, Mark Kelly (3%)

Cory Booker, Josh Shapiro (2%)

All other potential candidates, including Gretchen Whitmer, Wes Moore, and Rahm Emanuel, are polling at 1% or below. The “other” category scored 3% of the vote, and 10% of respondents weren’t sure who they would vote for.

The party is currently undergoing a particularly public facelift, with two factions fighting for control of the future. On one hand, moderate liberals want to bring the party closer to the center so they will appeal to more Americans who are currently defaulting to the Republican Party as their representation. On the other hand, far-left progressives are viewing the current situation as perfect for moving the party further to the left and embracing socialist visions like the one New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is attempting to sell. Only time will tell which direction the Democrats will choose.

“The University of New Hampshire poll took place from Oct. 16 to 21, featuring 1,547 New Hampshire residents and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. Likely 2028 Democratic presidential primary voters in the poll totaled 602, with their own margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points,” The Hill reported.
