The mystery of how Trump-hating fabulist Jeffrey Goldberg’s number happened to be in National Security Adviser Mike Waltz’s phone contacts, allowing him to eavesdrop on a Signal chat with top administration officials discussing strikes on Houthi terrorists, has been potentially resolved by a new report.
Last month, the editor in chief of The Atlantic, a leftist propaganda rag for the Acela Corridor elite, revealed details of the conversation that he was “mistakenly” invited to which was attended by Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, DNI Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among others.
Amid the ginned-up outrage campaign that briefly dominated the news cycle, the question of why of all reporters it would be Goldberg, a propagandist who spread the Russiagate conspiracy theory as well as the “suckers and losers” hoax, who was included on the March 13 “Houthi PC small group” discussion on the encrypted messaging app, there may now be an answer according to The Guardian.

In an exclusive Sunday report, the UK-based outlet cited the now standard anonymous sources to explain the “extraordinary twist” as an error in updating a contact after a Goldberg email about an anti-Trump article was forwarded to and later texted by Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Brian Hughes, who was at the time, President Trump’s spox.
“According to three people briefed on the internal investigation, Goldberg had emailed the campaign about a story that criticized Trump for his attitude towards wounded service members. To push back against the story, the campaign enlisted the help of Waltz, their national security surrogate,” the Guardian reported.
“Goldberg’s email was forwarded to then Trump spokesperson Brian Hughes, who then copied and pasted the content of the email – including the signature block with Goldberg’s phone number – into a text message that he sent to Waltz, so that he could be briefed on the forthcoming story,” the outlet claimed. “Waltz did not ultimately call Goldberg, the people said, but in an extraordinary twist, inadvertently ended up saving Goldberg’s number in his iPhone – under the contact card for Hughes, now the spokesperson for the national security council.”
“According to the White House, the number was erroneously saved during a ‘contact suggestion update’ by Waltz’s iPhone, which one person described as the function where an iPhone algorithm adds a previously unknown number to an existing contact that it detects may be related,” according to the report. “The mistake went unnoticed until last month when Waltz sought to add Hughes to the Signal group chat – but ended up adding Goldberg’s number to the 13 March message chain named ‘Houthi PC small group’, where several top US officials discussed plans for strikes against the Houthis.”
The newly revealed backstory is a transparent attempt to fan the dying embers of the “Signalgate” scandal that was hyped hysterically by Democrats and the media but failed to resonate with the American people.
When the story initially was broken by Goldberg, who published excerpts of the chat, it was being reported that the reporter had received “war plans” detailing the military action against the Islamic extremists who have been attacking vital shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, targeting U.S. and allied ships.
American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, @JeffreyGoldberg. https://t.co/vLTDk2wRet pic.twitter.com/VTFrAAzSfv

That sensationalist angle was, however, walked back after it was used to launch the propaganda campaign that Democrats exploited to demand the ouster of Hegseth, an outsider who is purging “woke” indoctrination from the armed services and is on a mission to clean up the Pentagon and restore warfighting as the top priority.
The campaign to force Trump to fire Hegseth and/or Waltz fizzled, along with the “Signalgate” scandal, at least for now.
Trump ripped Goldberg as a “total sleazebag” and the Atlantic as a “failed magazine” that “nobody gives a damn about it” in remarks to reporters last month.
